well I guess that between Bitter and Pale ale the golden ales tend to fit in,
Must be a sucker for good old British terms like best bitter etc lol

I've had Tapping the Admiral before - it might sound interesting on the label but I recall that it was a bizarre sweet mess. Another of those mediocre Shep Neame brews for Lidl. I've got a 4-4-2 but haven't drunk it yet....

I will say that the Gauloise beers are quite decent though.

Was in Morrisons earlier and grabbed a Hedgerow Porter as it sounded unusual. Their Hot Cross ale for easter is rather nice as well, definitely fruity/spicy.

Just polishing off a Prima pils (a rather old one). Time to crack open a Founders Pale ale.

Nothing ventured nothing gained eh? :stuck_out_tongue: I will be getting more Gauloise though. I only got the blonde, which was very nice, so i'd definitely like to try the amber too.

Yeah, I agree. Even though I have fairly low expectations for the cheap beers that shops like Aldi and Lidl sell, I'm still happy to try them once and rate them.

On a separate note, I've just opened my Founders Pale ale which has revealed a date on the bottle - bottled in October 2010!!! Un-fucking believable! Got this from Beer Merchants along with some other stuff - I guess it's a case of caveat emptor....
Tastes alright but makes you wonder what a fresh example would be like.....

Finally got everyone in their beds. Even the dog. I'll need to stick my nose into the tickle trunk to see what's there.

Wow that's ridiculous. Also makes you wonder how old the porter and the breakfast stout was... As well as other American beers i've had that have been crap but had hundreds of 4+ ratings.

As far as I am aware the Breakfast Stout at Beermerchants had not been in for all that long as I had not seen it on their website a couple of months ago. Their Pale Ale was pathetic when sampled against the rest of the Founders range. EssexAleMan, you were unlucky to have been sent what I can only describe as a 'rogue' bottle of the Porter. The Founders Porter I tried was the best Porter I have had to date.

I've ended up just sharing Innis and Gunn Rum finish with the missus.
At least you can taste some rum, that's all I'll say.

Is that because you added rum?

Well, at least the porter sounds like it'll be up to scratch - I've got one of those as well. The pale ale was deeply disappointing....

Well what I meant was that beermerchants themselves were being sent old stuff. I'm not sure whether the porter was rogue or not, it just had a ruining combination of extremely high carbonation (think coca cola) and high alcohol flavour on the tongue, which I have had in other highly rated American beers such as Rogue (fitting name haha), some of which were nearly undrinkable and had a water like texture thrown in.

It's time! for review no. 400....

I've cracked a Westvleteren 12 that I've been saving for a while - thought it would be good to mark a milestone with. It's very fruity.....and dark.

Going to make the most of today's sunshine, wash the car and then going to try the Hedgerow Porter.

So, what is your true verdict on it? I had it a few years back and to be honest I personally thought it was overrated. Each to their own though as they say. My favourite Trappist was Westmalle Tripel but having sampled that again a few months back it was nowhere near as good as what I remember it being.
