Did anyone try a fresh bottle of Thomas Hardy's ale when it was fresh? Just wondering what it would taste like or if it had any semblance of carbonation at that point!

No, it was brewed and bottled to be still (no carb). You may get some secondary (or rather tertiary) fermentation in the bottle on some vintages, however both fresh and aged are meant to be still.

When tasted fresh, Thomas Hardy's Ale was fairly malty sweet, almost cloying. After 3-5 years in the cellar, it dries out and balances very well, making it much more drinkable.
