I drank a Deviant Dale's IPA and I really tasted blackberry. And now I'm on SN's hoptimum getting a lot of boysenberry. What hop strains/techniques are they getting these berry flavors from? It's delightful.
Hmmm I'll have to pick up some deviant dale's and pontificate on this later. Berry you say? I think I've rated it but too lazy to look it up. Pretty sure I've seen it available lately, so time for a re-evaluation of its hoppy powers.
Not saying the beers you mentioned use this hop, but I have bittered with Pacific Gem in big proportions and (true to it's commercial description) it can add a distinct blackberry flavor.....along with a wood note and some harsh bitterness
Only thing I've heard about Deviant is that it has a good portion of Summit hops in it. Might also include CTZ, but I've personally never had CTZ throw any type of blackberry quality. Mosaic gives me a blueberry quality and it's a cross btw Simcoe and Nugget, so while I've never experienced berry from simcoe I don't doubt it's possible. YMMV of course.
Oskar Blue's webiste says it has a generous dose of Columbus in the DH. I have gotten dark berries from Columbus, Zeus is more grapefruit. I have gotten some hints of berry from Simcoe, but it is mixed all up in that pine and tropical fruit. Also depends on which grower you get it from.
Thanks for the replies. I might have to steer clear of those delicious berry flavors (drank too much, couldn't stop lol)
