Some time ago there was a somewhat robust discussion along the lines of "what to do about places?" (Yes, I tried searching. I'm sure it's out there, somewhere.) I took the overall message to heart and have been intentional in tracking places I've visited and in adding them to the database as I go through my notes.

That said, however, I also put this off. I am now sitting on a list of about 20 places to review after adding to the database. Some of these I might have attempted to add previously. Others are new, as far as I can tell.

As I prepare to dive into this, I'm wondering a few things:

Is there a way to track our submissions, and, if necessary, add more to the justification for their inclusion? Knowing that there is a list of places pending review would be helpful so as to avoid duplication, as would a list of rejected/denied additions (although I suppose if multiple people are suggesting a place then that's a good reason for its inclusion). Feedback or even a notification would be useful as well.

At some point it might be helpful to revisit the conversation around place criteria. What makes something a worthy entry? For example, the convenience store in a remote, rural area with an array of non-BMC yet widely distro'd mega craft might not merit inclusion in a more competitive market, even if it has the best selection in a 100 mile radius.

What about stadiums or concert venues? Do these merit an entry? Does anyone care that section 4B on the lower level offers more than AAL?

I'm going to submit an entry for a breweriana museum. I can't imagine there's many of these sorts of places, and it doesn't necessarily fit into the existing place types. Still relevant?

    Thanks for reading my ramblings!

We generally clear the pending places queue within the same day and there are no pending requests/open requests right now. We generally don't reject places as long as they serve/brew/sell beer and are not duplicates.

As far as I know there is no way to track places that you yourself have added but there is a counter on your profile for Karma purposes.

Not sure if there is written criteria somewhere but I think as long as the place brews/sells/serves beer then we won't reject it even if it's just macros.

On a personal note, I only add places that I think would be of a particular interest to other BAs and have a decent craft angle. I love Places on BA and hoping they'll become more relevant again with added features in the future.

I'd be happy to simply get a notification that a place I've added is live, so I can then add beers, a photo, etc.

I'll assume the one I submitted this afternoon is out in the BA ether, and a-huntin' I will go...

I think the only 'places' that could be in the 'iffy' category to add here are breweries that brew marginal to bad beers. I can't think of any other types of places with an automatic reason for rejection (well maybe strip joints that serve beer, etc.) However, I added a brewery in that 'iffy' category after deliberating about whether it was a worthy place, and ultimately rationalized that I should add it to warn other BAs to stay away, or at least don't expect much.

My thought is this is a database of places that sell, brew, or serve beer (there are other categories I can't remember right now), not a list of good or craft-beer -oriented places that sell, list or brew beer.

Adding a place that fits those categories ultimately means they're in BA, and can act as a resource for anyone interested in accessing that information, and at the end of the day, isn't that what matters?

I an going to add a random small microbrewery in southern New South Wales in the next few days. Almost no-one on BA will ever visit it, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be included.

    Cheers!

Agreed. A notification that a place was added is a good idea. Not sure if the site has that capability or if it's a priority. Either way, checking 12-24 hours after submission is a good rule of thumb (and we try to be more efficient with clearing the queue than that)

Everything outside of the `/community/` path is a separate system running on legacy code that we bridged with XenForo (our forum platform) over a decade ago. That means that the Alerts system is part of the forum and would need to be manually extended to our custom code. While doable, it would require a considerable amount of research, coding, and testing, and any coding at that level would literally be thrown away when we finally upgrade the site. Why? This code would be specific to the current software stack and not be compatible with any future upgrades.

Due to this, I've opted to delay numerous projects and upgrades as I didn't want to waste my time on throwaway code.

You know, I was thinking this is likely the exact reason...

I've added a whopping 5 places here. If this is the worst issue I have to deal with I have a pretty good life. Keep up the awesome work. Everything you and the mods do here is appreciated.
