My spouse has always wanted a keg but it is too large for our small apartment, however I stumbled on these 5L mini kegs today.. I think it would make a great gift. I started doing some research and I found this forum - I want to get the beer enthusiasts' opinions - are these worth it? I am definitely getting it for the cool-ness factor, it is a gift and all so I don't mind that its rather frivoulous, but I am worried about limited beer selection, and keeping the beer fresh if its not consumed immediately. Specifically I was interested in the keg made by EdgeStar. Please share your thoughts and experiences, or alternative gift options a beer drinkner might enjoy. Thanks!!
i think you can only get like heinkein and newcastle brown. Maybe a few more. If more craft breweries were available I would get one myself. A keg of beer on your counter would be awesome.
Where are you from. I'm pretty sure Bells makes these. I dont know anything about availability since they dont distribute to my state (yet). edit: here's a link http://bellsbeer.com/blog/104-Q_A__Bell___s_mini_kegs__storage__shelf_life__Oberon_design_and_more_
Yeah Bell's does a few: Oberon, Best Brown, Two Hearted. They are usually good for a couple days in this format, at least in my experience.
I have several different years of empy Oberon mini kegs decorating my bar, they are great for parties, when you have some beer drinking buddies over for a weekend, or most recently in my case painting my entire new house over the summer.
A few years ago, I snagged a 5L mini-keg of Bells HopSlam (the store had already burned through their 20-minute supply of six-packs and this was all they had left). Not sure if they do it every year, but yikes!
Its too bad more companies don't make these 5L kegs.. this would be a sweet additon to my kitchen counter, but who the F wants to drink Heineken? Gross!
Quite a few German breweries make these in limited numbers. I bought several mini kegs of Hofbrau's octoberfest this year. They maintain a decent level of carbonation for about 5 days once tapped, but you can push it out to a week with the beer going slightly flat but still tasting pretty decent. Aecht Schlenkerla does their Rauchbier Marzen in this format as well, and I've seen Bitburger Pils, Kostritzer Schwarz, Henninger's Helles, and the occasional Paulaner Original. Beck's and Heineken are the most readily available. Bell's Best Brown and Oberon are usually on shelves during their respective seasons as most other have stated as well.
I was wondering if you BA's out there could help me out. I'm looking to see what American Craft Breweries package in mini-Kegs (5L) . I know Bells does a few and Breckenridge does a christmas keg but other than that am drawing a blank. I know a ton of German Breweries make them but I'm more interested in American Brewers. Cheers everyone!
Here in MI, I can still find some Oberon MK's around still in grocery store coolers.. Definitely past their season though. Brown is out in MKs now too. Last year they didn't do any Hopslam MKs unfortunately; hopefully that returns this year!
Some breweries around here have 2 gallon rubberized kegs... I had a buddy who worked at Red Oak who gave me a couple. They use to give them to the bars to try the beer/see how it sells.
