Curious about thoughts of who have already opened a few of these or just one.

Is the base beer big enough to keep this beer benefiting with age?

Time will tell and is really the only way to find out, but I'm still interested on your take(s) on the matter.

    Cheers!

I thought it wasn't especially boozy, in fact I liked the level it was at when I had it last week, so I don't think age would be particularly beneficial for my tastes in that regard.

In my opinion, it was really kind of sweet and one-note. I thought it was reminiscent of a lot of more poorly made barrel aged beers in that the "barrel aging" was really all you tasted, and the base beer kind of got washed out. I don't really have enough experience to know how aging would impact this. Totally my opinion, and I am starting to find that I really only enjoy barrel aged stouts, so take my input with a grain of salt.

I agree about the one-sided taste...almost all barrel. Lots of toffee and vanilla. But I thought it was too hot....was hoping 6-9 months would help mellow it out and maybe the base would come through a little more.

Just cracked my first bottle. My thoughts exactly. Still very good right now though. I'm thinking it's harder for an Ale to compete with the barrel this fresh opposed to say a Imperial Stout or Barleywine. I did expect it to be hotter than Parabola and Abacus.

It's a barleywine, even according to Firestone's own website. Imperial ESB is a fanciful term.

While I won't disagree with you, nor Firestone...to each their own.

    Union Jack = IPA
    Double Jack = Imperial IPA

Double Barrel Ale = English Pale Ale
Double Double Barrel Ale = Barleywine??

Is what it is I guess. I'd be interested if you or anyone else can explain what I'm missing here.

It basically boils down to there being a lot of strong pale ales that no one has a good name for, so they either get called strong ale or barleywine. It's more a matter of taste than of history.

I believe they literally doubled the recipe, so there's really not a name for what that new style becomes. It's kind of like Crooked Tree and Double Crooked Tree. Some people call it a Double IPA, some people a barleywine.

I'll buy that, only because you're a "Peninsula crew" guy... and Double Crooked sure teeters that fine line between "T"IPA & Barleywine.

After cellaring it for a couple of years, and breaking it out for friends, do you then call it
'Aged Barrel Aged Double Double Barrel Ale'?

The Barleywine is sometimes compared the double strength of an English bitter.

I have a bottle of this beer at home, i plan to drink it soon.

I like beers with a lot of alcohol heat.

    I <3 barleywines.

I just drank 100oz of beer and am about to ride my bike 40 miles home from work.

I will let you know how all of these things turn out.

Thank God for that spell check thing that turns words red when you spell them wrong. That made this easier for you to read these sentences.

That 40 miles of gravel roads through woods, graveyards, and cornfields is going to make me sleep good tonight.

I was probably at less oz then that now that i estimate with a clearer head, probably 70-80oz.
