My local store has 4 packs of this beer on the shelf for 8 bucks. While I normally love barleywines and realize they age well, the reduced price has me skeptical. Any thoughts BA friends?

buy it and try it! I, personally, really enjoyed Monster. I held onto my last one, (2011) for 2 or 3 years before drinking it.

Buy everythig once and trust your palate. IMO it is a great English barleywine but, thats just my opionin. It has been retired from what i have read. If you enjoy style you should have no problem sipping on a 4 pack

I'd do it. Not the best barleywine, but a darn good one. I just pulled a 12 out of the cellar and enjoyed the heck out of it. Worst case you are out 8$.

lol, the reduced price is because its two years old. I heard Brooklyn stopped brewing the beer last year. Your getting a beer that should be aged, that's been discounted, 2 years aged

They discontinued because the brewery cat ("Monster") died, so they stopped producing the beer in the cat's memory. Check it out here.

That said, I also saw a sealed case of Monster show up on my local shop's floor last week, so who knows where that came from.

That isn't a reduced price. At least, in Illinois it isn't. I have not seen it where I live now (as it was discontinued) but back when I lived in Illinois I never saw a four-pack of Monster for more than $9.99 and most of the time they were $7.99. Same deal with Black Chocolate Stout.

As for whether I would actually buy it, well....

Would it be so hard to call it a darn good Barleywine? Not the best is really a silly point to start at.

Buy it. I have 8 2012s and they are drinking beautifully

Easily one of the best American brewed English style barleywines ever. Age won't phase it for a long time.

Buy em. I had a Monster that was 5 years old and it was phenomenal, huge dark fruits and caramel with just a touch alcohol to balance it. Its way better aged than fresh IMO
