I was chatting with a buddy of mine today about possibly making a Massachusetts brewery trip (thinking Jacks Abby --> Trillium ---> Mystic). It got me thinking that I like most of what I've had from them.

I feel like they should be getting more love than they are. Why do you think they're not consistently talked about on here? Why is there no monthly "Mystic" thread? What are your positives and negatives of the place? I've heard good things about the tap room.

Off the top of my head, I feel like I liked the table beer and the renaud and vinland (?). I want to say I had a cranberry saison that was excellent. Anyone ever had the Entropy? Sounds delicious.

I had some Entropy at the ACBF in May. It ate my soul. But in a good way.

3 Cranes is the Cranberry one you are thinking of.
Generally i like Mystic. I feel like they're smaller and they don't make IPA. This is why there in no Monthly Mystic thread. Was a huge fan of Last and Final Judgement.
I used to buy more of their beer but I was especially put off by Spectral Evidence and there you have it. I will be picking up 3 Cranes for Thanksgiving. Tempted by the vintage Descendant at the brewery too. Plus a new wild program, worth checking out.

Yeah, there styles just don't lend itself to the hype machine that builds up. They are really good and I love to stop by there when I head up to Boston. They certainly get my love with liter glasses of table beer!

I'm generally partial to Belgian style beer Mystic, Enlightenment, and Trillium are my preferred breweries in the city. They don't get the hype because they don't make IPAs, and the rest of their lineup, outside of Entropy isn't too crazy XTREEM either. They make really nice, balanced, flavorful saisons. I'm excited for their new sour program with CBC.

I think they are a very good brewery but they lack some "presence" in the market. A mostly 750ml format means I rarely buy their beer. Sometimes I get the wigglesworth series. I will almost always order on draft if I see it in a bar.

Not well known but they have made some good hoppy beers. Also a severely overlooked quad.

They make solid beers. Great yeast character, easy drinking. But they don't fit the "hype" market for new england breweries. They don't produce ridiculously hopped IPA/DIPA's and they don't typically do "limited releases" that draw peoples attention.

They just do what they do really well. I do think they should be shown more love. You just have to appreciate the saison/farmhouse style they brew. I always stop there when I am in the area, I think they are phenomenal!

agree with general sentiment; i'm not tripping over myself to start mystic threads, but they're a very good brewery. i've loved some of their saisons and wild ales.

still haven't tried entropy. i've wanted to since before they had a license to sell beer :slight_frown:

I agree with pretty much everything already said in this thread. Mystic deserves more love/recognition than it gets. Beers are great, the tap room is a fantastic hidden gem well worth visiting, and the work they do isolating indigenous yeast strains is exceptional and interesting.

(But, I'm also one who thinks Idle Hands/Enlightenment deserve far more love in the local market, so maybe I'm in the minority.)

Big fan of Three Cranes and Day of Doom. If their packaging formats were more wallet-friendly, then I'd drink Mystic beers very regularly. The brewery is hard to get to, and they have some big names to compete with that offer much more hyped beers at a similar price point (Trillium, Night Shift).

I love Mystic. Their The Hum porter might be my new favorite but Saison Renaud is also outstanding. And I'm always up to try their gruits. I'm really looking forward to their partnership with CBC.

BTW - The Mystic taproom generally offers 2oz bottle pours of Entropy if you want to sample it before investing in a whole bottle.

Mytic might be my favorite tap room in MA. The last 2 Mystic beers I had were pretty stellar; Greensleeves – citrus hopped saison; and Melissa – a terrific gruit. They make solid beers, but, as others have said, you won’t see lines at the brewery because they don’t focus on tropical IPAs. I actually like they don’t compete in that area of the market but rather have their own ethos and approach to yeast, and own it well.

That said I don't purchase a ton from them - if they offered more economical packaging options I'd consider them more often. I prefer to stop in the tap room every now and then to drink on premise.

I'm keen to see what comes out of sour program.

    Fan of Melissa myself.

I like the brewery. They are hit or miss with me, but they hit enough. The format prevents me from buying more than I would. Not everything needs to be hype driven. I'm glad places like this exist.

    Fair points all.

I do think that a lack of a "juicy" IPA doesn't help, too.

I like their stuff, but someone also brought up a good point: 750's. That's a good reason I don't buy them when I do see them at stores (rare). Very rarely do these appeal to me.

Im glad people speak highly of their tap room. I'd like to go.

Thumbs up. On occasion/in season I'll bring home a bottle of the Saison Renaud or Hazy Jane or Mary of the Gael or Table Beer and they've never failed to satisfy.

I wish they'd bring back some of the Wigglesworth stuff. The Welkin Ringer (ESB) was pretty great.

Had the Lord Falconers Oatmeal Stout. Thought it was great, not even a big fan of style but it was done well. Always mean to try their India Wharf, but pretty sure they stop brewing it. Always see same bottles at the store I frequent. I also think its their format 750ml corked and caged appeals to a narrow demo. Plus they do tend to be pricey. Never heard anything bad from them. So true they don't get a lot of love.

I have noticed more of the smaller 500ml corked and caged so maybe they are trying to make people notice.

I believe it's a function of a preponderance of IPA fans in the NE forum. I love their beers and their taproom - but then they make the styles I prefer. Fine with me if people don't obsess about them. If they got like Treehouse, I'd be bummed.

Mystic is my favorite brewery period. Entropy and Old Powderhouse are amongst my favorite beers in any style. I find their gruits very interesting. My only real negative is that their taproom is so far away from Plymouth. Otherwise I would be there every weekend.
