Yes Jack, I mentioned it to the pub owner. They offered a replacement but my wife and I were finishing a meal and on our way to somewhere else. But it didn't stop me from trying other cask ales. As I'm sure you know cask ales are pretty easy to find in the UK. Actually that was my only "bad" experience with cask ale. Another interesting thing I notices was that the ABV level on the cask ales I tried tended to be lower ABV. BTW I always enjoy your little side by side reviews of beers (especially when you use your Polish Pilsner glass).

Well, it certainly was when I was visiting the UK for business but that was a couple of decades ago. The Craft Beer Channel dudes did a multi-part video about trying to revive cask beer consumption in the UK (see trailer below). It sounds like today the younger beer drinkers view cask as their grandfathers beer.
When I was drinking British Cask Ale 'back in the day' it was that way as well. A session strength beer (e.g., Bitter Ale) just seemed to fit well with the cask serving method.

On a related note I will soon be drinking a homebrewed Bitter Ale. It won't be served on cask but it is bottle conditioned and I added only a little bit of priming sugar so the beer when poured is lowly carbonated to mimic the CO2 level of a cask beer.

    Cheers!

I like a nitro every now and again. Mayflower Brewing has a great nitro coffee porter in their taproom that's hard to resist most visits. Looks like I have plans later this month when I visit my home state.

Went through all the replies and they are very good.
I do want to take issue with those that say Nitro can never ever emulate a cask ale.
I beg to differ. It's very rare but it happens.
I really love cask and I am lucky enough to live in Salem OR were one of the best cask ale makers (Santiam) have their place.
The Double Mountain ESB was very good and to me very like a cask. In taste and how it feels in my tummy.
But this is very rare, which is why i wanted to start the thread.
Went back tonight and its long gone.
But they have Old Rasputin on nitro now(too strong I was driving). maybe tomorrow!

I don't really care for nitro. Even in stouts. I had an IPA on nitro once. That was terrible.
