I'm curious what everyone thinks about bar, brewpub and brewery pint nights--those wonderful, magical times of the week where pours are at a discount for the entire evening. I'm talking about happy hour--or better--pricing all day long? Sure it's a great deal for the wallet and I imagine the business more than makes up in "lost" revenue through the additional volume. But what's the drawback? Are happy hours really for amateurs (and *****s), as per the late Don Younger? Does the waitstaff think less of patrons and regulars for visiting on a discount day (as I heard some industry folk joke about)?

Personally, I don't have a problem with them, and if I can time my visit to coincide with a discount all the better. Especially if it's not a local establishment and I'm putting in a considerable amount of time (and fuel costs) to go. (I'm thinking specifically of Russian River and their all-day Sunday discount which, ironically, I've only managed to experience once over the many times in the past few years I've visited.) I find pint nights a great time to take newbies and introduce them to a favorite establishment. I've never felt like I've had a bad service experience because of the particular day, but I do understand that busy waitstaff might need more time to take my order and it might not be the best time to geek out over the beers, just like if I was there on a busy weekend night. And I always tip a buck per pour (even if it's $2.50/pint).

Thoughts? Stories? Best deals and favorite pint nights in your area?

Is this what it's come to? We're mad about discounts now?

The Tap House is Westmont, IL has a killer Monday night: $3.00 anything draft.

This has included FW Sucaba and Parabola, BCBS and BCBS Coffee, Baudoinia, most seasonal DIPAs etc.

Best deal I know of in Chicago's west suburbs.

Oh, and I'm for 'em, whatever the initial question.

i dont think anyone in the industry could reasonably look down upon someone for opting for discounted pours. aside from the fact that people are on different budgets (and might necessarily have to go with the cheapest options available), cheaper pours are a good way to introduce someone to different beers than they would normally feel compelled to drop extra cash on. now if you dont tip well, that's a different story altogether...

Happy hour is for sucking down macros with your co-workers until you can come up with a reasonable excuse for ditching them. If you're using it some other way than you are doing it wrong.

Agree fully (except for the ***** comment?). New amateurs to the craft scene should always be encouraged to try a new brew. I still consider myself an (seasoned) amateur. You already wrote what I'd say for the pub's point of view.

I am very much for them. I tend to go to discount days more often than any other day. I only go on non-discount days if I am going with someone else, I have beer in my fridge I like. But on discount days sometimes I'll go by myself and read, make phone calls, or do work (only if I can go before it gets crowded, like noon). I always tip at least a dollar a beer, and know I have to be a little more patient than normal.

As a consumer the only drawback is crowded-ness and wait time. The benefits are: good beer for less :grinning:Typically I only go to a pub if I have the time, discount or not, to so I don't mind the extra time (probably just a few minutes per beer).

I think in Austin Texas there are a lot of great pint night deals. My favorite is Flying Saucer Sundays ($3 texas brews) and Mondays ($3 for ~half their taps) because I am a sucker for the beer tracking system (keeps track of your beers and gives you awards). Draughthouse has I think 2.75 Tuesdays on a bunch of beers and other great deal everyday. I've seen other really good deals around ATX, but I still need to explore some places.

This makes no sense. Do the bars in your area not discount the craft beer during happy hour?

I disagree with this as well. The Happy Hour my office goes to on Fridays has half-price FW Union Jack, Lagunitas Little Sumpin', HA Daisy Cutter, just to name a few. It's not even a "beer bar" so to speak.

The bars I go to might discount the local stuff, but I don't typically order beers at a bar that are discounted. I can get the readily available stuff I like out of my own fridge.

I feel like I need to clear something up for those of you who live in places with backwards customs and/or laws:

Here in the civilized part of the world, bars offer a discount on their beer (most or all of it) during certain times of the day or sometimes all day on certain days. They do so because it attracts business and generally pleases their patrons, regular or otherwise.

Some of these places also have food, and will often also discount their appetizers, which is nice for people like me who eat an early dinner like an old person.

Neither of these practices seem like something anyone could reasonably become upset about or disagree with.

I thought this was going to be about bars having a specific beer on draft and giving customers the pint glass to keep for ordering said beer. For example most of the bars give away a Sam Adam's pint glass when someone orders a Summer Ale.

I wish the bars discounted their better draft choices around me. Sadly it's only BMC when they do have specials.
