I love Pumking fresh but I definitely agree that it is better with age.

if you like it drink it but Southern Tier hasn't impressed me despite their high ratings. I feel like their beer is engineered more than it is crafted...Duclaw is the same way IMO.

I'm not a huge fan. Their beer seems artificially produced imo. It's as though I'm drinking a massive concoction of sugars, extracts and adjuncts. The beer itself is never allowed to take center stage. It's always hiding and playing second fiddle to the nauseating goal of nailing the respective flavor profile. In the end, I simply prefer a bit of good flavor with my glass of beer more than preferring a bit of beer with my glass of flavor. To each his own though as I have friends who rave about the stuff.

I've only had the Creme Brulee, so I can't speak for the entire lineup at Southern Tier. Brulee is one of my lowest rated beers, so they aren't off to a good start.

I don't know if this is true or not, but it certainly tastes like it, which is why I steer clear of ST. I've never had anything from them that I've hated, but have also never had anything I've particularly enjoyed, either.

I haven't had all of their beers by any means, but the reasons that people are citing for not liking them are generally the reasons I like them. Attenuation, sugar levels, flavor overpowering the beer, etc. I'm not referring to BlackwaterSeries, 2X or their annual line up. Some are good, some suck. I am referring to their big flavor beers like Pumking and Mokah, which are two of my favorite beers. When you crave those strong flavor profiles, I have not come across a brewery that does it better.

I LOVE Southern Tier but Creme Brulee is an awful, sweet mess of a beer. 2xStout is where it is at! Mokah rules as well.

If I wanted a desert, I would turn to actual food, not an artificially flavored crappy stout that is all over the place. And this is the way I feel about all beers people classify as 'desert beers'.

They make some decent beers, but they make too many novelty beers to be a top-tier brewery. This is my opinion, of course. I definitely enjoy most of their beers.

Forgot to mention, 2xRye, 2xOne, 2xIPA are all great beers as well.

ST is in my top 3 as solid consistent breweries. The backwater series is so amazing. Mokah, Choklat, and Creme Brulee are so dope. Jahva is excellent aged, its a shame that one isnt brewed anymore. Had a long talk with the brewers during Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week about bringing UberSun back. 2X and Live are some of my all time favorites.

Where's the love for Compass? I really enjoyed that beer, albeit not really easy to pin what "style" I would consider it.

As noted before, Molah is awesome. Creme Brûlée was way sweet. Pumking is terrible...the worst of the pumpkin beers for me (admittedly a style I am not a big fan of to begin with).

Always loved their IPAs. Have never tried their stouts though. Hear they are ridiculously on the sweet side though.

My friends and I did a blind tasting where we guessed which was which and ranked them in order of prefrence. A lot of fun, but in my opinion they an all around good brewery but not amazing [IMG]

Unearthly is a very respectable DIPA in its own right.

Any reason to suspect freshness issues? They are not presenting themselves that way to me in Missouri. Which beers let you down? Just wondering...

If they had cooler branding and played the hype game they would be more desirable. Have either loved or enjoyed a large variety of beers from them over the years.

Apart from 422 which is fairly crap.
