This is ridiculous. Everybody Is defending the real cause of all this: the brewery. They had no lines at the last release and as a result had cases sitting on the shelf for months. So, being a business that wants to sell quickly and return their investment, they lifted the limits for this release. Obviously, they underestimated their popularity and as a result a lot of people got shut out.

So now they will impose limits for future releases and that in turn could hurt them, too. I know I wouldn't drive 300+ miles round trip if I'm limited to 1-2 bottles. I think a lot of RVA folks wouldn't do it either. Now ask the brewery if they mind losing 50-75% of their usual Richmond sales and see if that worries them. It should.

I drove up from south of RVA and was in line around 8:30am and I don't feel bad for deciding to buy an extra couple of sets after standing in line for 4 hours in 20* weather. Those that slept in, had a nice breakfast and hot coffee, that decided to roll up around 11 and think they were getting the variants- as the saying goes, the early bird gets the worm.

I don't, however, defend the 4-5 RVA guys that cut the line at 11:45- they were the true douchebags.

    This and it ends there.

Last release left bottles at the brewery and on some shelves for a couple weeks, maybe two months tops. They made a decision based off of past release. No Limits. It backfired. Yes, people said that there would be people buying a lot, but $3000 worth? I don't think any of them expected that. As for those people, they were well with in their rights to do so. Sure it sucked for the rest, but the rules had been made. Changing them on the fly would have just pissed off those guys. There was no way to make everyone happy, DAY OF. If they bought for friends and only kept one or two sets for themselves, I don't really have any issue with that. But if they spent that all on themselves then, well I just don't get it. I love the craft beer scene, but for that money I could have bought a car that works.

I'm friends with Adam, the brothers and even some of the family. I talked to a few of them Sunday, including Adam. Moma Shifflet told me a story of someone who came up and apologized to her later after she had told them earlier they were out of the Variant they wanted. And apparently there was someone in line who decided not to buy out one of the variants so that the people behind them would get something. That's the kind of people we need in the craft beer scene, not the greedy dbags. They know what needs to be done next time and I'm damn sure that they will come up with something that supports everyone. They are great, kind and caring people. Matter of fact, I didn't even go and Adam was willing to put aside stuff for me, but I chose not to. So you're welcome.

With all of the hype surrounding craft beer and trading 3bros should of known something like this would happen. It's fairly simple you put an initial limit on it and if people want to get back in line that is up to them.

Just wondering from the people who went and tried Resolute for the first time. Is it better then the top tier imperial stouts that we can buy off the shelf?

I'm aware of the people who cut in line and completely agree, very poor form. Though many of them arrived at 9:45 and start chatting up with their friends who were in the front, and they have been getting plenty of crap through facebook about it. In addition, I know of one guy who got their at 11 or so and cut, but apparently he was given a pass because he had DB Mexican Cake with him. He ended up buying 10-15 sets...

With all that said, I do agree with what @lillitnn92 is saying. Still, people hoarding the variants and muling them knowing full well the line behind them, are not an asset to our community no matter what the circumstances that were presented.

It won't and here's why. This release of Resolute had less bottles and will see no distribution, there was no limit and yet it's still available at the brewery. If on next release there are more bottles, there would most likely be distribution on it. Which means RVA would see it on shelves. So they wouldn't be loosing a thing. You'd still get your beer and you won't have to drive (the measly hour) to get it. The variants are a completely different and separate beast and I suspect if they do them next year it will be brewery only for them like this time. Regular Resolute does not get affected here, so there's nothing to worry about.

Why can't they just do a 2 bottle limit per person on variants and then allow those who would like more to go back to the end of the line for an additional bottles? This would discourage hoarding and still allow those who arrive early to have a fair shot at the variants.

    * initial limit can vary based on how big the line is prior to opening the doors.

If a time machine exists, sure, then I'm all for something. Fact of the matter is it's Monday now. It's done. Time to stop with "they could have", they should have", "why didn't they" .... They feel bad for those shut out, but the day of event was too late to change the rules that had be set in place.

I don't think it better than Bourbon County but to me that is the top dog and its at least in the same coversation. I've never had Parabola but as for the rest, this one is definitely up there and I'm sure many people will enjoy it the most.

For me, it's up there with the best of them.

It's not my first time having it but I second @HookemHoos. This years batch for me was my favorite of the 3 they have done. Thicker mouthfeel, more balanced and better barrel characteristics.

It's certainly up there. Very impressed they improved upon last year since that was so delicious.

I missed out on the variants because I didn't want to wait over an hour for a draft beer (waited 25 minutes and the line didn't move more than 3 feet). It was all good though. We went to Capitol Ale House and they had 2013 Resolute on draft. We also went back to Three Brother's later once the crowd died down and had plenty of the 2014. I guess I'm in the minority, but right now, I think the 2013 is drinking better. The year old Resolute was one of the finest BA RIS I've ever had. It was so well balanced, with very little heat, and the chocolatey/roasty flavors came through beautifully and really complimented the bourbon. The 2014 is a little hotter than I'd like right now, but I think it will be every bit as good with a year of age. The fresh Resolute really does remind me more of fresh BCBS than any other beer (not quite as thick), but in all fairness, I tend to like BCBS better with a year or so of age also. I haven't been the biggest fan of a few of Three Brother's beers. They've been hit or miss for me, but Resolute is an unbelievably impressive effort for such a young, local brewery.

    More widespread than you think...

Someone bought most of the total bottled batch of Kuhnhenn 5th Dementia a few years ago.

The last Hunaphu release lead to people banning on the doors as people who showed up earlier than they were told walked off with cases.

A certain Kia Soul has made its way to several recent releases at Perennial and others walking off with cases.

At Jackie O's the same person just about always carts away cases with a hand truck.

These are the few off the top of my head I can pick out.

I definitely understand buying a couple extras for some buddies who couldn't make it but to buy for a 'beer group' of 20+ people (100-150 in your case) says that you really only care about yourself. You are basically saying that if you hook up all these other people in your 'beer group' they'll hook YOU up. Let's be honest, most of the people in your 'beer group' don't give 2 shits about you and I'm sure you feel the same way about them, it's all about getting yours.

This type of behavior is not only a slap in the face to the hundred+ people waiting in line behind you, it's a pain in the ass for the brewery because now they have to set up rules and regulate them at the next release, all because some selfish asshole(s) wants to hook up his/her 'beer group' so that said asshole(s) can get hooked up in return.

Wait, what? Having a 2014 BAMC DB allowed him to cut? That's some flawed logic...at least those around him it is...

I've got single and double barrel BAMC, regular 2014 MC, 2013 and 2014 hunas, and a slew of other beers, I'd never use bottles I'm gonna crack to gain a spot 150 to 200 people ahead....I was 100 deep in the line on sat...sad state of affairs when opening a bottle garners you that sort of entitled "privilege"

I was being sarcastic with that statement. Sorry to not be more clear. He had friends up in the line, and he strolled up around 11 and got those cases. Am in no way condoning those actions, and I know the guy. I'd have put his name out there too, if I knew his BA handle.

I know both guys in question and can verify that's what they did. They emailed a core group, including myself, and offered to mule for us. I initially passed but then my schedule changed Friday night so I decided to ride up and wait in line myself.

I would've loved it if they'd have numbered the wristbands to hinder the line jumpers, but then I'm sure those guys would've just handed off cash and it would've been worse on the guys in question up front. I also witnessed several incidents of people coming up and handing off cash.

As for the measly hour drive remark- it's more like 2.5 for me. :grinning:

I'd say it's easily the best barreled RIS made in Virginia and 3 Bros, along with Alewerks, represent the state's best craft beers IMO.

Agree with both those statements. Though I will say that Trickery was pretty phenomenal. That one really surprised me.
