I'll be in Chicago for a couple of days next week and really want to visit Three Floyds brewpub while I'm there. What is the best option for getting there and back without renting a car?

Man, I don't know. At some point you will need a car. You can take the red line all the way south, but will then need a taxi probably. Know anyone else that can carpool?

Carpool, Zipcar (hourly rental), Divvy (kidding), limo...

I seriously wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't just catch a ride with a BA who just happens to be going. If it were 10 years ago, pre-wedding and kids, I'd be PMing instead of wistfully typing.

Three Floyds is in NW Indiana - there's the South Shore, but it drops you a good 10 miles plus north of the place, and the neighborhoods are sometimes pretty sketchy. And that's the closest public transportation. You are not heading to a place integrated otherwise into the Chicago metro grid of buses and trains.

As a result, I would not recommend heading 3F way without an actual car. It is not likely to end well. If you are seriously unable to swing the car, I think staying in the city, with its extensive beer scene, is the better choice. If you are married to a pilgrimage to 3F, plunk down the money and drive.

It's not a bad bike ride - can make it hard to bring stuff back with you, but at least it's scenic.

I'd be surprised if the OP is down for a 60 mile round-trip bike ride. More power to him, if he is. I couldn't make that ride.

Regardless, you'll need a car if you plan on actually buying any beer to bring back.

Thanks for the replies. I'd rather not have to driver after drinking at the pub, so unless I can rope a friend into driving, it'll have to happen another time.

And if you're going on a weekend best of luck getting in. That place amazes me with their lines on weekends, and I live by Kumas and Hot Dougs.

I'm curious what path you take that makes for a good, scenic bike ride.

Meh, I've stopped in all different times on weekends, and the lines thing is exaggerated. Last time was on a Saturday evening around... 5ish. Maybe a dozen people sitting outside waiting, most of them groups of 2. Some groups of 4.

I normally stop in by lonesome, and they get me a seat at the bar pretty quick. Maybe 5 minutes or so? The bar seats turn over on a pretty regular basis. It's larger groups that have an issue. But, anywhere popular you go on the weekend will have these issues.

That's kind of the time to go! The lines are mostly in the AM/early PM. And the to go line is awesome to watch people waiting for beers with regular regional distribution.

Grab a Divvy and hop on the Metra?

B4 new years I went to the pub on a friday afternoon. Zombie dust had just come out so the line for that was ridiculous already. Ended up waiting 2 hours just to get seated

Call a cab and have them meet you at the south shore station around the time your train gets in

And we all get to find out if "bike jacking" is a real thing.

Even if you cab there, getting a cab back might be tough. Id say you (or a friend) need to drive.

And yes, it can be biked, but you aren't going to be able to bring anything more than 2 bombers back. You and your bike need to be in good shape to trek about 40 miles each way, not for the faint of heart.

    Yup. Best advice right there.

Catch a South Shore Line train out of Millennium Park, take it to the Hammond stop. Cab it. Or, there are some city buses (350/355/358) that run in that vicinity, but have weird schedules, so look into that before just hopping on a train.

    Good luck and enjoy!

You could probably call a cab to pick you up at one of the South Shore line stops (either East Chicago or Hammond) and then take the cab the FFF. Maybe you can get the drivers card and call the same cab to bring you back later in the night, or just call the same cab company. There won't be cabs just driving around that area so you will need to schedule one.

Can you use Uber in The Region? might be easier than calling a cab.

Edit: Region Rats telling me Uber is not available:slight_frown:

I'm in Chicago for only a day and a bit, so if I decide to carve out a chunk of time for it, I'll use something like GetAround.
