I don't think Anchor Steam is mediocre. But you've got to drink it in San Francisco, it's fresher and better.

If Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a mediocre beer then I don't know shit about beer and never will.

Sounds like you are saying that if a brewery has the ability to brew enough beer to meet demand for their beer the beer is mediocre.

Call me crazy, but many of the listed beers in this thread are far from mediocre...maybe they are mass produced, but that doesn't mean they are using cheap ingredients or cost cutting methods.

That is not at all what I'm saying. I was using the term "mediocre" as what was asked in the original post. I think the OP used the wrong choice of words. IMO, "mediocre" could be replaced with "easily obtained" or "readily available". Two Hearted is both and always a delicious choice. I welcome Bell's to produce more!

Why would you go to a mediocre beer if there is better?

If you mean less popular and lower price, then Shiner Bock, Flying Fish HopFish and Guinness.

    Fat Tire
    Brooklyn East IPA

Aside from BL, I would say "middle of the road" rather than mediocre. I love a good cold Black Label with a burger though.

Having go-to mediocre beers indicates to me that someone drinks for the buzz, so they will drink about anything. Many of us here on BA don't fit that profile, not in it just for a buzz, and willing to pay more for excellent beers enjoyed in moderation. Though I might nurse one mediocre beer if offered - just to be sociable - I'll generally hold out for excellent.

I won't drink a mediocre ale unless it sneaks up on me.

Sam Adams 12-packs: often mediocre but still almost always enjoyable and I like trying new beers
Sierra Nevada 12-packs: rarely mediocre but answers like SNPA seem to be the response du jour for this thread
Beers for my wife: Boulder Chocolate Shake, Sea Dog Sunfish, Heavy Seas Gold

No, @RogelioRodriguez is correct many of beers listed in this thread are far from mediocre

Mediocre - of moderate or low quality, value, ability, or performance : ordinary, so-so

Also many of the beers listed are AAL's which the OP said to exclude, but then again the
OP includes Genny Cream as one of his top three. While not an AAL because it's an ale, it
has a lot in common with beers in this category. Please knock yourself out arguing the
    semantics of this.

AAL - Light bodied, pale, fizzy lagers made popular by the large macro-breweries (large breweries) of America after prohibition. Low bitterness, thin malts, and moderate alcohol. Focus is less on flavor and more on mass-production and consumption, cutting flavor and sometimes costs with adjunct cereal grains, like rice and corn.

Additionally, who has a mediocre beer? You may have a sentimental beer that is a mediocre beer as Genny Cream Ale is for me, or you may have a limited options or funds beer like many listed here, but that is hardly the same as a "go to" mediocre beer.
