hated this beer. immediate drain pour for me as well.

not because it was "too sour" or because i'm "not into sours" or because i'm a "noob" but because it tasted disgusting. like cold, raw, rotting meat. just horrific.

one of my biggest gripes about this site is that it is, ostensibly, a rating the taste of beer site. yet anytime someone says "this beer tasted like X" to me, 10 people jump up and say "well, you're wrong" or "it can't taste like that.. you're just an idiot"

taste is subjective. how people perceive certain ingredients depends on many, many, many factors. yet many people here treat everything as one-size-fits-all. taste perception just doesn't work that way.

secondly, this notion of a "correct" way to rate beer. "you should always rate to style". because..... we're all certified beer judges? it's worse than people griping about karma on reddit. fuck.

the guy doesn't like Enigma. it's really not that radical an idea that someone wouldn't like something that you do.

Obviously the beer isn't going to be for everyone, and people's palates get entirely different experiences out of the same tastes (see: People who think cilantro tastes like soap, people who think Simcoe hops taste like cat piss), but I'd say Delirium to Enigma might not be the best jump. There's a lot going on with Enigma, lots of sweet and sour fruit taste, some hops, etc. Delirium is a little more straight-forward, and not quite as much of a shock to your tastebuds. All of Dan's fruit beers are VERY fruity, which can be too much for some people.

I'd consider trying a few more fruity beers before definitively saying you hate Enigma; maybe try one of NG's seasonal fruit beers (Serendipty, Belgian Red et al), and then come back to it. Or not.

So bottom line was I was not expecting a sour beer and thought the beer was off. When it comes to taste we are biologically wired to fear things we are not familiar with. While I'm not wild about it, I no longer have the "danger, danger" voice in my head. Since I have a 4-pack I tried another with a different mindset. It's definitely different than anything I've tried before, but I see potentially warming up to it.

Careful - that is a potentially very slippery and expensive slope! I am glad sours are tough for me - it means I don't spend all my money on them!

Maybe you just don't enjoy Flanders Oud Bruins. Have you enjoyed the style in the past? Staples in the style such as Vanderghinste Oud Bruin, Liedman's Goudenband, Monk's Cafe Flemish Sour, NB La Folie, and Bacchus? Personally, it's a style I greatly enjoy, but I know many people who don't. To each their own, but you are clearly in the minority of people who don't enjoy Enigma so it's more likely a you issue than an issue with the beer.

wow, I loved this beer. I guess its style? Maybe try some of new glarus's fruit beers? Serendipity or raspberry tart are my faves and are not too challenging. Good on you for not trashing this beer it in a review.

Sours aren't a little different than other styles, they are a LOT different... and I'd say definitely an acquired taste for most. That said, acquiring the taste has been enjoyable . If you want a real challenge, start tackling gose. More seriously, with any style that your palate isn't a fan of in the beginning you have two choices: "not for me", or "I'll try a few and see if it grows on me". Enigma is a good sour, so don't look at it a a bad beer... that would be like saying PtE is a bad beer because it is too hoppy.

But "sours" aren't all the same. Have you tried many Flanders Oud Bruins? Maybe you don't enjoy the style.

Why is this any news? The beautiful thing of beer is there is something for everyone and not everything is for everyone.

Actually find this amusing. Most people start with regular beer and move into the sours gradually once they start appreciating the style. My daughter started with ciders and I have been working her into beer thru the sours. They can be quite the shock if you are not used to them.

Anyone who didn't get what they were expecting or who feels buyer's remorse from having purchased a 4-pack, let's work something out as I enjoy this beer very much. Not even kidding...
