Just wondering about people's attitude to ticking here. Mine's changed quite a bit n the last year or so . And how many go to ticking/tasting events on at least a semi regular basis?

A good point that I really agree with.

When I first discovered this site I wanted to write full descriptive reviews for every ale I could,
now I have deviated slightly probably due to indecipherable tasting notes taken whilst a little merry,
beers already having thousands of in-depth reviews whilst not being that much of an inspirational brew
and I would be tempted to do so with a beer I have strong memories of
but haven't supped/no longer have access to

I use to abhor the very notion of ticking in all forms at all times. Now I'm more accepting and understand that with the right people ticking can be both enlightning and enjoyable. But then I've been lucky as I'm surely in the most generous& genial tasting group in Edinburgh. However, I still find the essence of ticking, the quest for numbers & categorization in an unnatural situation to be less than ideal. Ticking has its place when quantities & time are limited & the act of sharing special rare bottles a real group bonder. Just a shame that ticking is lacking one of the basic fundamentals of beer drinking. Context .

I sometimes can't be arsed to write full reviews, so I tick (i.e. store it here as a "had") in order to still have my list of beers-what-i-drunk.

never been a ticker, but I know I've sampled many beers. The beers I enjoy I drink, often and, sometimes, in quantity. In a previous incarnation on BA I added many reviews of beers and pubs in an attempt to balance the USA centric nature of the site, but it was a futile pastime and, quite frankly, pointless.
Many of the beers in my cellar I share as I rarely feel the need, or desire, to drink a bomber of a 12% beer, some of those I share with tick others just enjoy the beer

I just drink. Everyone else is free to do as they please, but I just try to enjoy the beer and the situation. Taking notes can kill the social aspect.

This. I don't write full reviews at bars and fests anymore and tastings? On the rare occasion that I get to share rare beers with some great company, the sharing is the funnest part and me writing a full review just doesn't happen.

I tried doing tasting notes for a while, but I was terrible at it and it reduced my enjoyment of drinking beer, so I stopped.

To each their own. I go to plenty of events during the year where I try multiple beers. If I'm able to decide my opinion of a beer I'll list it as a Had, so I can look to try it again. There's many times I don't bother ticking the beer because I didn't feel like I could give a fair assessment of the beer. The only time I'm doing full reviews is when I'm able to do so (enough quantity, notes, and time to adequately describe what I'm drinking). I'd consider myself a Ticker and I'm fine with it.

Just not a fan. I feel that a beer is only worth reviewing if I can do it proper justice. If I'm at a festival or out with friends, then I'll just drink (as Ron so eloquently put it above). I'm not bothered about accumulating numbers for the sake of it - there will always be a beer I haven't reviewed.....

The 'do it justice' thing is down to the individuals palate.
There are plenty of folks out there who nail the description and can score a beer better in 2 sips than others who could drink 2 pints of the same thing.
I've found the more beers you try, the better handle you have when giving a score, exposure to many other beers within the style etc.
In order to try hundreds of beers and gain that exposure you need to sample small pours.
If you find a true great out there then hit a bigger pour.
It doesn't work for everyone but it does for me.

Plus then you don't waste as much time with bad beers. Oh how I wish my first Fosters experience was just a shot glass.

I don't tick, i'll sometimes note what is on where to pass on the gen to other scoopers/tickers via websites. I have gleaned much gen from said sites so it would be poor show not to reciprocate. Spread the joy.

hence the Arbies who 'rate' up to 50 (or more) beers in a day?

    power rating as its known.
    works for some not others.
with every hobby / interest there are many different folks involved with varying degres of experience.
I couldn't have asessed the merits of a beer in a few sips when I first started ticking, but having ticked on and off for 20+ years I am comfortable doing so and most importantly in a consistent manner to my own scoring system.

I understand why people are skeptical about ticking but my experience with tickers has been overwhelmingly positive. And it is possible to taste a wide range of beers and still make many insights. Problem is ticking totally turns the whole purpose of drinking I side out and upside down.

Yeah the main impression I always get from tickers is of people who'd rather spend the time trying different types of beer and therefore learning from those experiences. Whether they choose to tick because they want to build up numbers quickly or whatever other reason doesn't matter, the ones I've met still count among the most knowledgeable beer enthusiasts I've met.

Don't see where the condescension comes from really.
