Do you mean El Segundo Power Plant? I always thought it was a boozy mess. Beachwood Hops of Fury was a worthy contender, not sure they even brew it anymore.

Agreed. No shortage here of exceptional brews. In travels, if RR is available I might do it depending on the price. Instinct tells me that RRs beers can be wicked overpriced.

From the source (RR)? Not at all. And with all due respect, it's the only brewery I've returned to 10+ times . .. 100% worth the time and expense.

I was referring to retail... bottles, not the source. I'm sure I'd enjoy it!

Even so, PtE is a steal at 5.99 a bottle retail most places in CA.

Out here in the PNW and in California, pricing is pretty comparable to other locally made IPA's, DIPA's, sours, etc. When I lived back East, RR stuff was often pretty expensive in the SEPA area, but this was at a time when PtE was scarce and in great demand. So taphouses could get away with charging a premium. Since RR expanded production, my impression is that this is no longer the case. A friend sent me a copy of the draft menu at Monk's during their Younger release event, and outside of Younger (which was definitely exorbitantly priced), all of the RR beers were fairly reasonably priced (pints of PtE for $8.50 for example).

Needless to say, but pricing will vary from one retailer (bar) to another but as one example below is a link to the taplist for Chaps Taproom (just up the road from Capone’s) and the Russian River beer they have on tap now is Happy Hops IPA at $9.50 a pint. For comparison Fat Heads Head Hunter IPA is ‘only’ $7.00.

It would be an easy choice for me here: Head Hunter all the way!!

    Cheers!

P.S. The last time I visited Chaps Taproom they had PtE on tap at $10.00 a pint.

That's real considering its rung on the beer ladder. I always think worst case scenario, like airport prices or festival prices. Again, if I see it in my travels and it's not high as a cone kite in price, I'm on it! Related, I pounced on some Maine Beer Co. bottles last yr as they were $7. Stellar!

Over Happy Hops, yes; over PtE, never.

Maybe it was just exceptionally fresh, but Happy Hops is the one “wow” IPA I’ve had in several years. :beers:

EDIT: I take that back, Heady 20th was a “wow” beer, too.

    Well...

I am indeed a fan of PtE but is it $3.00 'better' than Head Hunter IPA!?! My first 'reaction' is no here. But if I won the lottery I would spring for the $10 pint of PtE!

    Cheers!

Yeah El Segundo, not smog city. My mistake. I've never had it but it seems like some years people like it a lot.

One of the most impressive things about pty is its consistency year to year. Seems like most other offerings struggle to maintain that

Resident Culture and of course Burial do TIPAs but they're usually murky. I've never had PtY but my understanding is that it's got plenty of clarity to it, which is actually what I prefer (depending on my mood that is). Burial always has at least one on at their taprooms year-round, Resident Culture is more sporadic, but I never notice there being a season of them. I'd really like it if there was one.

I hesitate to admit the most I've ever paid for a pint of PtE, but it was worth it.

Yeah, that's getting up there. We have one place in PDX that charges that much for PtE, but they have a reputation for high prices. For the most part, the going rate for PtE is in the $8 range

That being said, of course you're right. There are always going to be variation in prices depending on where you are and where you go.

LOL! By local ordinance, airport prices here in PDX are the same as downtown prices. You won't generally find RR beers on tap at the airport, but there's a pretty impressive beer presence at the airport.

Lots of TIPA”s in Minneapolis with Blackstack being the most prolific. They generally have 1 a month or so . Other local breweries like Elm creek, Montgomery ,Back channel all release 3!PA’S thru out the year

There are modern WCIPA brewers who are either serious competition or have improved on PtY. For example:
El Segundo's Power Plant and Nuclear PP
    Wondrous's Triple Cuff
    North Park's Triple-Fu
Slice has put out some bangers
    Beachwood's Hops of Fury
    McIlhenny's TIPAs.
