I don't tip at a brewery if I'm dealing with one of the owners which is often the case at small breweries.

You just paid the person $37 tip for 2 minutes of work!
I would say $2 would be more appropriate.

If there is not an option for "none", they've got a customer satisfaction issue.

I only tip people who getting paid at the "less than minimum/tipped employee" pay rate which is allowed in NJ and many other [but not all] states.

It is up to breweries to pay their employees a decent wage, they shouldn't be demeaning their own labor by begging the brewer's customers for more.

Tipping 15% on to go beer is insane. I tip $1 per pour or growler fill, and $1-3 total on bottles to go depending on how many if it's from a bar or taproom the person getting me the bottle depends on tips. Toppling Goliath's on premise bottle sales are in the taproom and I usually throw a couple bucks in.

If it is a pour of any sort (pint, taster, growler, etc) I will tip. If I'm picking up packaged beer to go, I do not.

I did google it an for restaurants it makes sense. The workers are still tip workers and don't make min. wage (well thats a misnomer, they make tip employee minimum wage, but not the regular minimum wage) and they are taking their time to do it. It might not be 20% worth but 10% appears reasonable.

Yet this topic was more about taprooms and grabbing pre-packaged beer. in this case no one is doing any work other than ringing you up. I doubt the cashier at the taproom is a tip wage earner so they are at least earning minimum wage. So I'm not tipping for them doing basically what a convenience store clerk is doing.

I don't tip for prepackaged beer. Filling a growler or buying pints, of course, and tip accordingly.

Generally I find with the screen it's just an option in the checkout software that they leave up as generally the customer handles that side. Kind of like how if you get a printed receipt you still have to indicate no tip.

Did I mention anything about tipping for prepackaged product? Nope. Why? Because I only tip for take out food and growler fills. I deliberately omitted cans because you shouldn't tip for that.

Was this on one of those tablets with tipping options of 15%, 20%, and 25%?

A local shop serves beer, but you can also pick beer out of the cooler to take it home. They have a tip line, and I always cross out the tip line when I'm just buying beer to-go.

I'm personally in the camp that holds with no tip for pre-packaged beer. So I don't tip the at a check out counter, just as I don't tip the stock boy for beer I buy out of a cold case at a grocery store.

That you were given the opportunity to add in a tip if you chose suggests to me that either they are using general purpose software intended to provide for several different kids of situations, or that they also operate something like a brewpub where you can get food service as well and their software is set up do deal with that type situation and doesn't "play favorites."

One big advantage to using the now old-fashioned practice of paying cash is that nobody is suggesting anything about tipping so you are in complete control of what you spend.

(Similarly you don't have to worry about fake card readers set up to steal your information, or about folks photographing the heat pattern left behind on the keypad as you enter a PIN so they can later "read" the photo and tell which numbers you entered and in which order you entered them.)

But then there's that blasted tip jar with the catchy slogan on it to contend with. There's no escape!

The proprietor is responsible to pay their employees fairly. By buying the product or service, I've done my job as the consumer. Tipping only rewards the business owners because they always get paid while the employees are relying on the charity of the customer. Stop the cycle.

The growler store I work at uses Apple Pay on an IPad, the tip section comes up every time someone uses a credit card. If the person just came up bought something from the coolers, or knew exactly what they wanted to fill without any help or samples, I just hit no tip while the card is processed so the customer doesn't see it. Depending on what is going on, like if they need help, sample everything on tap, or have a pint at the store then I would let them prompt through as they see fit. I still don't expect any amount of tips though, but thats just me.

The people who are fetching your crowlers and ringing you up may well be paid $3/hour (the tipped employee minimum wage) as a tipped employee, and your transaction takes up (some) of their time. So that's my rationalization for paying them a buck or 2.

YEah, If I have a pint, it's a buck tip. Growler fills are a buck or 2, depending on how many I'm having filled - more growlers is more tip.
If it's pre-filled cans or bottles, no tip.
