I don't go to bars too often and when I do it is usually a short affair. I got a single house beer (a collab w/ Heavy Seas in fact) for $6.50. So, I debated tipping but I didn't. I mean it would have been like 50 cents to a dollar. I had to ask for water and service was not great. Normally, I tip pretty well. However, I don't really like this place and they charged me $10 for an Oaked Arrogant Bastard a month ago, which was the last time I went. Apparently the guy remembered me from another time and asked me what I did for a living and I said I was a student. He said I should probably stick with McDonald's. I had talked with the guy before and he was a nice guy. I am even friends with the head bartender/brewer (not sure exactly which he is). I am feeling very much like Steve Buscemi here.

Well, it looks like $1 is the standard for beer, according to my google searching.

Usually 1$ is fair, unless your drinking 20-30 dollar beers

$1 is the standard and expect by bartenders. His McD's comment makes me think you've stiffed people in the past. Remember these guys make less then minimum wage if they're not tipped. If you don't have $ to tip you don't have $ to go to the bar.

Yeah, this was the second time I had been there and the first time I went there was the first time I had ever been to a bar. TBH I had no idea about anything that first time but I spent much more that first time. Yeah, I don't go out to eat and I didn't know you had to tip bartenders the first time I went. I thought they were paid differently from waiters. Live and learn. I'll make it up to him next time.

I'm honestly not sure if you're joking or not. Restaurant service industry workers get paid basically 1/2 of the mandated minimum wage because they are "tipped employees". In some cases, depending on where they work, a waiter/waitress has to tip out the bartender and food runner a certain percentage of what they're total sales are (usually 5% - 7%). So if a table rings up a $100 tab, sits at the table for an hour, and doesn't tip the waiter/waitress literally just lost money by working that table.

I wasn't joking. Just never had any reason to actually go to a bar before, because I didn't like beer until recently. I mean I had bought mixed drinks once or twice at a celebration dinner, but that was ordering through waitresses. This may sound silly but before now, I always had thought bar tipping was done in those glass jars that some places have on the counter. I just figured they got paid differently since you needed to learn bartending first (i.e. how to make drinks and all that stuff). This all makes me sound dumb or ignorant, but I just thought it was otherwise. Whoops. I guess it always depended on the place. Smaller places have the bartender also doing the food, while others have them separated.

It's times like this I wish DING was still around.

Having worked in the service industry, I tip well unless the service was egregiously bad. If the service is beyond normal (or buyback or something else is in play) I tip very well.

    Cheers!

I'm a much bigger fan of the Japanese system, alas this is not how it works in much of the west (although in most countries the tipping culture is not as strong as the US) so we have to play by the rules and tip accordingly.

With that said you should vote with your dollar. If the service is bad don't tip, or tip less than the regular amount. If the bartender doesn't like it, that's his problem. Just don't be a dick yourself.

This is one thing that's seriously wrong with tipping. The bartender does the same amount of work whether I buy a $20 dollar beer or a beer thats a happy hour special for $2. The bartender is helping the restaurant by selling something more expensive giving them more profit if they want to pay him commission they can feel free but I will be tipping the standard $1 per beer unless I think he deserves more based on something else but price of what I buy never factors into it with drinks or food.

$1 on beers and 20% on food is how I get down.

1.50 to $2.00 a beer has always been my style, perhaps a bit high but I realize they don't make their nut from the base pay, but at the same time I expect good service and willing to withhold tip if it is not up to expectations.

You could say the same thing about waiters and ordering Surf and Turf vs. a house salad.

I typically just tip the same ~18% for beer that I do for food. Is that uncommon?

I usually just do a flat rate per drink at a bar, $1 per or something similar... food though is a 20% on the amount, since usually the more the bill is the more i order and possibly the more special requests of details are taken, recorded and relayed by the wait stay, not to mention clearing of dishes, refilling water and bread, etc.

Tip 1$ a beer unless the bartender seemed to make a habit of overlooking you and provided better services to others and left you completely ignored and thirsty. If the bartender goes out of their way to make sure you are satisfied or attempts to create a friendly social bond with you tip extra. This will help you get better service next time you visit. Also I would recommend tipping well if you plan on being a regular, a couple extra $$$ goes a long ways.

Also, don't take the "they charged me $10 for an Oaked Arrogant Bastard" out on the bartender. The price is what it is, controlled by the bar not the bartender. If this price was a surprise to you or wasn't posted somewhere then let that be a lesson to ask before you order.

Yeah, but if you buy a 750ml of a 10% beer you're likely not ordering much more than that for a while (in the sense that you'll be drinking it for a while). So instead of buying, say 4 sessionable IPA's and giving the server $1 a pop, you're drinking the same amount but giving the serve $1. All the while, you're taking up the same amount of space in the restaurant and requiring the server to repeatedly check in on.

The amount of space I take up in the restaurant effects how much the restaurant makes not the server which is reflected in the price of the 750ml the server can go help other guests while I drink my 750 and besides that its a bad example at least for me since I dont drink 750 of 10% at a bar at least alone since I will likely have to drive home at some point and it doesnt seem like a very smart thing to do if I order a 750 of 10% at a bar its to share with a friend. Lets pretend I order a bottle of Rare at $100 I can tell you I will still tip $1 unless I think they deserve more based on service or some other reason like lots of special requests (like giving me the bottle for free then the waitress can expect $50-75 win win for both of us she gets a big tip I save money only loser is the bar) I think this is fair since the same amount of work was done by the server no matter how much I spent.

The only way I would not leave a tip is if I got the worst service possible. The bartender would have to look me in the eye call me an asshole and then dump a beer on my head. Other wise I am leaving $2 for 1 beer. If I order multiple beers and food I usually go with 20% or more if they go above and beyond. Tips are how they make their living. If I can afford a spend $10 on a beer. I can afford a $2 tip.

Also if I sit at a bar and only order one beer I do not expect the bartender to offer me a water. Why do I need a glass of water to wash down a good beer?
