Depending on the cost of the growler, it's usually $2-$5 tip.

A lot of bottle-shops here fill growlers now, and I don't tip them..... heck, we don't even tip when we drink pints at said bottle shops. They seem to actually discourage the practice, although I feel guilty every time I leave with no tip.

The real kicker is this: I usually tip $5 or so for a hair-cut, and there is a barber-shop that sells beer on tap for you to have during your wait (maybe while you're getting your hair cut???) I've never been there, but I wouldn't even know where to begin with that tipping structure!!!!!

If you consider tips as an acronym, it would stand for to insure proper service. As a former restaurant industry worker [bartender, waiter, cook, manager] I can assure you that most of the time you will be remembered for either giving a tip or not giving a tip and your attitude toward the server. Therefore, if you are going to be frequenting a certain establishment often, it would be in your best interests to provide a tip and not cop a 'tude'.

I do not regularly buy growlers; the few times I have, I did not leave a tip for the person who filled my growler
...should I feel shame or is tipping not a part of the experience?

I tip a buck a beer and a buck a growler fill. Personally, I feel they earn it more on the growler fills.

Do you tip your bartender when he pours your beer? I feel like the person filling your growler is providing a service! I tip when I get growlers filled, that's just me

I always feel awkward when a taproom/bottleshop has a tip line when you buy beer to go. Never sure what to do there; I've tipped and I've skipped.

If all you're doing is getting the growler and leaving then probably. If you're already tipping for service and getting a growler to go then work that in.

I was at a grocery store with growler fills where you pay all the way up front with a regular cashier. I didn't really know how to tip at that point so I didn't. When at a brewpub, I always tip for a fill.

There are specific situations/places where I either don't tip or tip more than this, but the norm is a buck or two per growler

Related question: Do you tip when picking up beer-to-go from a bottle shop/ bar?

A bartender made me feel really awkward and bad for not tipping the other day when I showed up at a bar/ bottle shop and bought about $100 worth of rare bottles to go. The venue specifically advertises itself as a craft beer bottle shop - with different prices for beer-to-go and for drinking in the bar (they call it a corkage fee). I was in there for about 20 minutes hunting around for bottles from the various fridges, and I bought about 8 bottles and left. The bartender totally lurked around acting unfriendly after realizing i wasn't going to be leaving a tip.

Should I have? Maybe 5 bucks? She did help me by grabbing 2 bottles from the back, but she mostly poured beers for other customers.

edit* This is why I think we need to do away with tipping and just pay people a living wage. If you need to increase prices, then increase prices.

If they pour and help then I tip. They could be pouring 3 beers for regular patrons instead of filling my growler...

I've never seen anyone tip at a growler station at a liquor store. Bars and brewpubs absolutely.

I tip if its part of another service, like I had a few beers at a place, then got a growler to go. However if Im just stopping in at say Half Acre to grab some beer out of the cooler and a growler, I dont tip.

I understand a corking fee if you are drinking there. I would never expect to tip for advise on beers. That's part of the appeal of a local shop vs the "Total Wine" type of store. BTW most bottle shops have to pay minimum wage tips are extra, I imagine this varies by state law.
