Everybody should work exclusively in the food/beverage service industry for one year. They should be forced to earn their living solely on the generosity of others. They should learn what it feels like to get burned by a poor tip, or no tip at all situations.

I personally think the idea of tipping is idiotic, as someone else mentioned, relieving the owner of an establishment of most of the financial weight, and placing it directly on the customer is shitty. This allows owners to afford to impose long hours and 6-7 day work weeks at little cost to them, placing a large amount of stress on an often overworked staff, who are forced to be friendly and witty at all times to ensure a proper tip, despite having to work upwards of 12 hrs a day 4-7 days a week. Yes the money is there, but you can't sit behind a desk for 60 hrs and just mail it in, you have to bust your ass to acquire that sort of income in the service industry. I would LOVE to make $16-$20/hr, in this industry and not have to rely on tips.

I do believe that a lot of the comments I've read here are based on sheer ignorance, and do not necessarily reflect on people's dispositions. Work in the industry for a year and revisit this thread. To make a long rant short, you should always tip when buying a growler from a bar or restaurant.

Haven't read all this thread but I work in a bottle shop and when I fill a growler I definitely do not expect a tip, if I get one it surprises me. When I'm pouring pints and chatting people up I somewhat expect tips.

Usually I have one while my growlers getting filled so they get a tip.

Last time I didn't drink one while waiting I had 3 growlers filled and picked up a couple of bombers at TG think I dropped him $70 on a low end of $60's tab. Worth ever penny!
