So I was lucky enough to get my BCBS and variants before the release day. I brought it to my parent's house on Thanksgiving and my dad asked me how I got my hands on it early. When I told him that the owner of the liquor store I frequent gave it to me early, he asked me if I gave him a tip. This got me thinking… is a tip appropriate/expected in this scenario? He always holds pretty much any beers I want and emails me with new arrivals before he puts them out on the shelves. Am I being a dick by not tipping him or is my continued business enough? Thoughts...

Tip him in beer that he can't get.

Exactly. I'll do this for my local place. Even if I'm not buying anything, I might swing by and drop off something that's not sold here.

Continued business is typically enough, especially on the run of the mill 6ers that help him get the limited stuff.

Also no one says no to free beer.

The OP indicated it was the owner of the store that hooked him up. I was always under the impression you didn't give an owner a cash tip but a gift of some sort wouldn't be out of the question. And you of course reward him or her with your continued business.

I wouldn't tip, but continue to frequent the store and show your appreciation. I'm always more than thankful and appreciative when the shop I frequent keeps me in mind for limited releases by putting one aside for me or drops a surprise beer on me on a visit like they did yesterday, Sweet Repute. I have on more than a few occasions dropped off beer to the shop/staff that doesn't get MA distro - like Bell's and NEBCO - since I visit upstate NY frequently to show my thanks/appreciation for the little things they do for me.

Its a love/love relationship... he's happy you frequent his store that's why he gives you stuff early and notifies and holds stuff for you.... your happy you get that you want... he holds stuff for you... so you continue to go there. I don't think he's expecting anything or he might of cut you off....which would be dickheaded...

I would definitely say get them anything. A gift is a nice gesture and shows you appreciate what he does and how he runs a business.. dosent have to be beer.. maybee if he's a sports fan...something sports related.. could get some brewery related gift for him.... whatever it is I'm sure thell appreciate it.

Quick story.... I visited a new beer store (which I now frequent the most out of any of the ones I visit) and was chatting it up like I always do.... getting friendly.... well like 2 weeks later I happened to come in when they got a really really rare beer in and he mentioned it to me... I think they only got 4 bottles of it... so I bought it.... did a seperate trade and got him a beer he's never had and gave it to him.... he goes on a trip and brings me back two great beers... I will reciprocate the favor.... also gave me insight on tasting groups... bottle shares...etc...

My thoughts are keep good people around you. Get that person a small gift....

I would feel awkward attempting to tip or give a gift to a beer shop employee. My beer guy and my relationship is business only. I'm not trying to woo him.

I don't have a beer guy. I don't buy anything that rare or obscure to warrant me tipping the guy that is taking my money at a profit.

Well, if he continues to do it then I assume he doesn't mind the fact that you aren't tipping him. Maybe give him a little cash as a Christmas gift or something. Basically just a "thank you" for being a cool dude.

When I travel from Ohio to Long Island, I always go to my old distributor and trade bier. Sometimes I have nothing and he'll simply hook me up on the price of what I buy. Next trip I'll bring him something as thanks. I'm not buddies with him, but we both love bier and that's enough.

I certainly tip my beer guy, and often times i'll just get a message from him saying " I've got a beer waiting for you." I don't usually even know what he's gotten, but usually its something i'm looking for. For instance he was very kind to us during the BCBS release, so he was gifted with some wonderful harder to get beers, not because he expected it, but because he is a good beer dude who loves craft, basically just a BA who does it for a living.

Do you tip the mailman? That guy fought off dogs and carried a 40 pound bag of mail up a hill in 20 below weather just so you could get your bills yes, but also a card from your aunt honey in Boca. This guy, sells beer. That's what he does. He sold you beer early. ><

I already vote my post snarkiest.

Before I got in the field im in now, I worked at a dealership, my beer guy happened to drive a Honda, and serviced his Honda at my Honda dealership. He always got employee prices and he never had to wait longer then 45 minuets no matter how long the wait was. We are on good terms you can say.

giving beer to a man who has a store full of beer is kind of ridiculous.

developing a relationship with someone who values you as a client and as a friend is commendable.

friends do things for each other that are commensurate with the effort and longevity of the friendship. pay attention and be on the lookout for something that your friend might appreciate.
hint- it is not going to be beer. tickets, sports related or music related, books etc are all good ideas.

    Cheers.
