Popped into a local pub for lunch.A customer came in, looked at the row of pumps and said he didn't recognise anything (all micro stuff).......in an instant the young woman behind the bar pulled a sample from each pump and described the beers.
Now what service does tipping ensure?
As an afterthought, if all the customers in a US bar are good tippers then who gets served first?

Money can be a powerful motivator. But it is virtually impotent compared to a good conscience.

That she went above and beyond on what the 'minimum standards' of service, as you describe them to be, is required in that she gave the free samples and the added description of each. For this the server deserves a tip.

I am having trouble understanding this theory. So in essence it is about the near worthlessness of providing a tip that would match up with one's conscience? Or, in other words, despite the merits in or benefits to the server in giving a tip such as supplementing their wage or reward for good service, that your moral qualms about parting with your money for these reasons should override you doing so. Seems not right to me...

I think he means one should treat people nicely (i.e. not spit in their food) even if they aren't tipping. Maybe.

he means that the motivation of the server should be to provide great service, not to get a tip. I work in a customer service industry that doesn't get tips, so the only motivation is to provide great service. It really couldn't be simpler.
