I'm camping in Lake Placid this weekend, and on Sunday my wife and I plan on taking the Port Kent ferry across to Burlington VT to check the place out. I've been told its a good city for walking, so we don't plan on taking the car and just wanted to walk to what we can from the ferry terminal. I've checked on the beerfly guides here, as well as beer mapping, to get an idea of where some things are. But if anybody has any tips on what bars/resturaunts to go to, as well as if there are any good places to buy beer to take back to my campsite, let me know. I've never had anything from Hill Farmstead or The Alchemist, so I'm hoping to at least get a pint from one of them, if not buy some Heady Topper for home (if its easy to find). Thanks!
There's slim to no chance that you'll find retail Heady Topper on Sunday in Burlington. Just being honest there. You can find it in a few restaurants in town, but probably not any retail locations. Hill Farmstead doesn't sell retail except on-premise (at their brewery in Greensboro). In extremely rare instances in the past, some retail stores got some HF bottles but it's not walking distance from ferry. I recommend walking to Farmhouse Tap & Grill, taking a seat and ordering a can of Heady Topper and sample/glasses of whatever Hill Farmstead and others are on tap. The Farmhouse is a short walk from the ferry and they serve food so you can eat and drink
+ on the Farmhouse, for bottle shops try city market and Pearl street beverage. You won't find any heady or Hf but both have good selections. Zero gravity brewing/American flatbread and the Vermont pub and brewery are also good options, house brews only at both.
X2 everything james said. In addition, Zero Gravity Brewing at American Flatbread is also definitely worth stopping by. Just a short walk from Farmhouse too. If you really want a heady and Farmhouse is out (a definite possibility on a Sunday) check out their sister restaurant El Cortijo which is just down the street. They don't sell out as frequently as it isn't a big craft beer destination, despite having HF Edward on tap and a few other high quality offerings. If you are looking to purchase some beer to bring back to camp Pearl St. Beverage is the best walkable option. Their craft selection has improved and now is close to or on par with Beverage Warehouse in Winooski, which you definitely don't want to walk to. EDIT: vtcraft beat me to the punch
Totally agree about Zero Gravity - it's my fav brewpub in town. Great beer and great food. I don't think that I've ever ordered a Zero Gravity beer and been disappointed and I order a different one each time I eat there. I only left it off list since OP wanted HF and Heady. If you are in Burlington for 2 meals (lunch and dinner), then check out both Am Flatbread/Zero Gravity and Farmhouse. They are about 2-3 (small) blocks apart.
Excellent tips! I may move my trip over to Burlington to Saturday instead now because of this info, so I might get Heady and will have more days at camp with whatever beer I do pick up. I love this site!
There's not much chance of finding retail Heady on Saturday either. Most places sell out within hours or the same day as delivered. You could chance it with one of the small and lesser known shops, but it's basically just luck if you find it. You'd need to find a store that had it delivered on Friday and then you'd probably have just slightly more than a slim chance of finding it on Saturday. I think Friday deliveries go to Morrisville and Stowe, so no Burlington deliveries on Friday (IIRC). Besides Pearl Street Bevs, City Market has a decent beer selection. It's not a beverage store, but it's close to Church St Marketplace and its better than a gas station selection
Ken's pizza, slices at the bar and Heady cans. OR As others have said, the Farmhouse is great,(the food as well) Zero Gravity also top notch.
James, could you please tell me where the deliveries to Morrisville go? Are they on or off premise? Thanks.
Get a growler (or 2) to go from American Flatbread / Zero Gravity to bring back with you, plenty of great beer. They don't advertise the sale of them well so just ask a server/bartender. Go to Farmhouse for excellent drafts. Heady is available at a huge amount of places that serve beer downtown.
I based that statement on this tweet from Alchemist: https://twitter.com/alchemistbeer/status/360801562190299139 I'm unsure if they meant retail or restaurant deliveries, but I'd check Stowe Beverage and Cold Hollow Cider Mill. Other Stowe/Morrisville places at http://www.alchemistbeer.com/retail-availability/ I only keep track of Burlington area deliveries, so I'm not quite sure which places there get Friday deliveries.
Thanks for the list. The only one on the list that looks familiar is Moog's Place, and I had wanted to stop in there for awhile anyway. Only a few more days until I get the chance!
Green Top Market is the only place you can buy Heady to take with you, in Morrisville. Pretty much only locals go there and it is also a great market. They limit it to a 4-pack per customer but I'd say 75% of the time I go in there they have some. It is also not far from Lost Nation, which if you are in Morrisville you have to go to.
I'm only a part time local, so thanks for the awesome tip. My place is near Lake Eden, it's definitely going to save me a drive shoud any heady related emergency shortages arise. I head up in a few days and Lost Nation is my last stop, I can't wait to check out what those guys are doing.
Lake Eden is a great spot. Everytime I go up to that area, I think why don't we come up here more often. As an fyi, Lost Nation doesn't do tasters they only serves full pints, but they'll let you taste anything you want. If the Gose with Currants is still on tap, it is a must try imo. I don't like fruit beers generally speaking but that beer was very good.
Here's another great (and in-depth) article about Lost Nation (just went online few minutes ago) http://www.7dvt.com/2013morrisvilles-lost-nation-brewing-explores-lighter-side-beer
Thanks again. I'm just going to buy a growler to enjoy at the end of my drive so I'll keep my fingers crossed for Currants. Give a shout if you're ever up Lake Eden way in August, I'll be there until around Labor Day.
