"This upcoming Sunday, January 25th, we will be releasing HandFarm Batch 5. HandFarm is our house Saison, SaisonHands, fermented & conditioned in local Chardonnay barrels for roughly six months and then left to condition in the bottle for an additional four months. This series, as it exists at our current facility, has evolved into almost a solera-type project. Each new batch is blended with a bit of the old batch and the beer we all know as HandFarm continues to propel forward becoming more expressive and pungent with each new iteration. Batch 5 is no exception; Bone-dry, pungent, and snappy, with an almost hyper-peppery meets kumquat finish. This is my favorite iteration to date.

    650 500ml bottles available. 3 bottles/person. $14/bottle."

    Anyone going??

Before I saw this post I was already planning on going to Philly Sunday-Monday to check out a few craft bars. The original plan was to hit up Tired Hands early in the day... Problem now is we are not trying to do the whole wait in line thing on this particular day. What is the line going to be like? Trying to figure it out if it is still worth going to Tired Hands.

    Cheers,

    Brian

I'll be going. The place will be a zoo. Expect a line that starts around 5 A.M....goes down the block by 8-9 A.M. wraps around the block by 10, and goes down to the post office by noon. It's generally not a good idea to get there after 10 and expect to be in a position to get bottles, although it's not completely impossible. If you're not going to get bottles, feel free to show up just prior to open at noon and go through the main doors. Still...if you want to get a table and/or get growlers without having to endure a significant wait inside...you'll probably have to put yourself in a position to endure some kind of a wait outside prior to opening.

Is it worth it? I'd pay for the beer... but not if I have to go through the hassle. Maybe I can just hire my own mule and then I'll have 2 bottles to sell at a profit to cover the cost. Too bad dayworkers aren't allowed to wait outside of Home Depot in PA ;p

Worth it? I dunno. I pretty much go to pick up bottles for friends in Oregon and Wisconsin who constantly inundate me with good stuff from their neck of the woods. There isn't a lot from out this way to send in return, but they both thoroughly enjoy the Tired Hands bottles, so waiting in line periodically so I can return the kindness they bestow upon me is the least I can do.

Last Handfarm release i was able to show up at 12 when they opened and get bottles, but i think there have been a lot more people since then but the releases have also been different than handfarm so who knows. I do know for the last emptiness series that some people were able to get in line again for a 2nd time, so if you showed up before 12 you got bottles.

True...200 people is still a lot and I'm not quite sure any of the last few releases have seen that kind of turnout. I'm sure the release of Paragusia 3, whenever that is, well be a complete festival of shit.

I have been to TH about a dozen times, but never for a bottle release. How quickly do they get through the line? Just curious how long the process will take.

It's cash only, so it moves a lot more quickly than it used to "back in the day." But if you're at the back of the line, it can still take 75-90 minutes to get to the point of sale. So... get your standing around in early, or put the time in later...but either way, you're going to wait. You know?

That's about what I expected. I am glad you told me it was cash only. I never have cash. Thanks for the response.

I was at the Para2 release. 250 people got bottles. They opened at 12 and sold out at 2:30 with a constant flow of people the entire time. So no, cash doesnt always mean it moves fast.

I hired a mule for the last handfarm release. I paid the cost of bottles plus a bottle of A Night to End All Dawns.

They are ridiculously inefficient and they need to revamp their system for bottle sales. Adding a 2nd cashier is the simple solution. I got there at 8:45AM for the You are the Emptiness sale which started at Noon. There were 450 bottles available, 2 bottle per person limit. At 12:55PM I finally purchased my two bottles and there were still at least 80 people in line behind me. I'm 43 years old and got carded...I guess everyone gets carded and that adds 10-15 seconds to each transaction. The Alchemist truck sales for 500-550 cases are twice as fast as Tired Hands. Expect to wait an additional 30-40 minutes in line if you want a growler filled. They changed their growler fill policy as we were walking out to 'only 1 growler per person'. Next time, I think I'll wait until the 2nd brewery is up and running and hopefully the increased production and space will lead to less wait time. Was it worth it? Well, the beer was incredible. My point is, now you know what to expect, so you can't complain like I just did.

I think the you are the emptiness release is an anomaly. It was the perfect storm, peach saison bottles, MagoTago on tap and right after the holidays so a lot of people were 'home'. The plum emptiness was much better with growlers especially and a bit less people, i was around the corner from the post office in line, got bottles and sat down at the bar and got growler fills immediately after, right around 12:45.
