You have people that work nearby or have a flexible work schedule who drop chairs right away, head back home or to work and then show up right before the line condenses. If you are up near the front you will be out pretty quick, so you aren’t spending all that much time waiting. I would imagine it is more trading than pure selling the full allotments. People selling may just be selling part of allotment and then recouping some of the money they spent for their own beer. I think places like other half with the full case allotments has a higher reselling market.

Thanks for the reply! I'll be there around 6-7 this evening, looks like they got about 20 cases left. Hoping it makes it.

If not, I'll see you in 2 weeks when it releases again lol

Been doing releases since the early days of Alchemist slangin HT out've the back of a truck.
When TH first started bottling, then canning, I never once sold a can... and very rarely even traded. 95% of the cans I buy are shared with friends and consumed by myself.

With that being said, I am about to start selling beer (primarily: Hudson Valley, Tired Hands & Alchemist). Why am I doing this? Because I find no problem with it any longer, the only part I do not like is how it makes lines longer and releases more challenging for the honest fan just trying to buy a few 4pks to consume.

After diving into the underground market and talking to many people, it's clear that the process is more than mutually beneficial for both sides. Some people have more time than money, some people make a lot of money but don't have the time to make a release. If Chad makes 200k a year working 80hrs a week at a law firm and wants to pay $10/can, who's to say someone shouldn't be able to offer it to him at that mark-up?

That's how it is in so many other areas of life, why not beer?

My main hobby for the last 15 years has been sneakers and Street wear . The resell culture there makes beer look like a joke.

I usually just trade. I can get my hands on beer that others can't. Others can get their hands on beer that I cant. It's mutually beneficial to complete a transaction.

Well, for one thing the people doing this are probably not reporting this income to the state or the IRS. For another, even assuming they spend 5 hours to make $150, that's $30/hr. But $30/hr tax free is the equivalent of ~$40/hr or so of wages. And as was pointed out above, people who work during the day are able to invest, let's say, an hour or so stalking around to drop their chair, and then another hour or so in line - and that's on a bad day.

On a good day you can drop a chair in 5 and maybe spend ~25 minutes in line, for a time investment of a half hour. Maybe you even go back to work from noon-4 and run back to Ardmore. If you have some flexibility and are smart about it, you can probably clear your $150 with only a couple hours of time invested. Meaning you're clearing $75/hr tax free, which is like making $100/hr in wages. I don't think you're in "bum" territory there, considering that over the course of a year you can pull in a couple thousand bucks this way.

I mean christ, I sold plasma in college for practically nothing. Certainly not for the kind of money a few 'shake releases would bring in. This is a no-brainer for people who have the time to invest in it.

I mean I referenced all of this in the Supreme article I posted last month but at the end of the day it's just highly illegal?

I don't know if I would say it's "highly" illegal given that it's hardly enforced whatsoever (yes, I'm aware of the recent isolated incident). And there are plenty of illegal activities that aren't harmful let alone "wrong."

I don't really have any issue with people reselling or muling beer. The shake lines are long for a ton of reasons, reselling is just one factor.

with that said, for the past three weeks Tired Hands has been marking hands at the Wednesday can releases. I asked last night when I was marked if they were having a problems with people double dipping and I was told its rampant. Kinda crazy that they take issue with a release like last night, from 6:20 on the line was no more than 30-40 people. If someone wants to buy multiple allotments and they are about to move it behind the bar, shouldn't that person (mule) be able to do so? I believe everyone should have a shot at beer, but if someone isn't going to show up until opening the next day does that person deserve to have beer held for them by not selling it the night before to someone else?

Not judging anyone personally, you do what you want, just commenting on the fact that it's literally just illegal to resale alcohol without proper licensing etc. I get that this market exists and is thriving, just pointing out that there are actual consequences if busted.

I didn't realize that, I can almost never make an actual release and rely on it to hit the bar or next day and I've never been marked.

I get it. But characterizing it as "highly" illegal seems to ignore that it happens regularly and in plain sight without any enforcement whatsoever.

The fact that it's such a huge deal when there's a mere warning that there might be consequences only serves to underline the lack of seriousness of its illegality.

Haha true, me wagging my finger in someone's general direction definitely goes to show the lack of enforcement but I just found it amusing that someone would come on here and go "here's why I'm going to commit a crime". Again not judging (god this feels like seinfeld) it was just odd to see.

Yeah I totally get that you're not judging; but the fact that people can describe their law-breaking on BA and all over social media (with accounts connected to their personal info) without any fear of repercussions whatsoever, again, serves to show how little trivial that law-breaking is. I would compare it to speeding but I bet the rate of enforcement for even something like that is higher.

I'm interested to see whether that changes with SESTA/FOSTA, however (more so with sites self-policing than with L.E.).

I would also say that all of the groups I belong to on other sites for purposes of trading etc just got done changing their names to have nothing to do with trading so clearly someone was spooked. Meanwhile BA has doubled down from what I saw the other day as far as trading is concerned.

As it relates to Tired Hands right now currently I see that all three made it to today. Enjoying the fact that outside of shakes there are generally available cans and bottles.

$70/4pk of milkshakes seems pretty common.

I love the beer, truthfully probably share more than I drink myself.
But if I'm getting 12 cans and someone wants to pay for all of them in exchange for 4 cans, seems like a pretty great deal to me.

So if you are on the original line and get marked and then go to the bar after 7 are they allowing double dipping that way?
