I came into this thread being skeptical based on the title. It's a legit question, well put.

    I'm a Hamms guy.

    Hamms
    Old Style
    Schlitz

High Life is the beer I drink at dives if Old Style isn't available.

Wow, Hamms seems to be crushing this "crushable" thread.

Now I have to change my favorite cheap beer...

Honorable mention goes to Carib and Stag, but I haven't seen those since I was in Trinidad.

Those 3 all go down like water.

Also, I scratch my head as to why craft brewers constantly try to compete in this space at all. Just trying to understand how people justify spending more to have the craft version of AAL or Mexican lager. Not saying they are "bad" offerings just won't spend $12 on a six just because of the craft or independent moniker...

If they're ice cold they're ball crushable, if not they all pretty much suck. Nothing worse than the half warm PBR I had at the bowling ally yesterday, ugh, just terrible. Temperature is really key to these beers, I read the article on the craft brewers sampling AALs, I would have been interisted at what temp they were served. I guarentee that surprising PBR at 34 degrees is a lot different than that beer at 50.

Dale, you raised an excellent point. AAL beer are indeed best served cold. It would be very worthwhile to know what temperature the beers were served in the article that you referenced.

    Cheers!

Haffenreffer Lager? Damn, I haven't seen that since the early 1970s and then it was only once and it was suspect due to age (although, Falstaff listed it as one of their brands into the 1980s).

Haffenreffer Private Stock Malt Liquor (which, although an "American" product brewed with an "adjunct" and, probably, "lager yeast", most would classify as a "malt liquor") is apparently dead. (The last version I remember, as a Pabst-product coming out of a Miller brewery, was nothing like the Cranston malt liquor I recall).

Members of the Haffenreffer family stopped licensing it to Pabst (or somehow got the trademark back) around 2009, and they were contract-brewing it at Matt and City/Latrobe, using the 'dba's' of both Private Stock Brewing Co. and Haffenreffer & Co.

The beer's gone, but the website lives on -
    http://privatestockbrewing.com/
(Some great photos - something tells me the brewery doesn't look like that under Boston Beer Co. ownership)

That attempt apparently failed and one of the founders, Nick Shields, went on to create Spiked Seltzer, which he sold to Anheuser-Busch recently, and apparently, got a job there, too.

Ok, "no" is my answer then.

FYI my top rated AAL's are:

    Budweiser
    Pabst Blue Ribbon
    Tsingtao

... granted, it is my least favourite beer style.

Articles and recommendations actually work. First seaquench and then hamms. 90% of the people I saw when I showed up to a party didn't realize they still made hamms. And I thought $9/12 was solid. I found another place selling 24 packs for $15. That's basically $19/30 packs of BL. Unheard of.

I can definitely believe that blind tasting hype. On the surface this has the same initial miscues as cheap macro. But it's not giving me headaches nor does it feel overly carbonated or corn sweet tasting.

Yet I also sessioned with some miller light, maybe now my second go to. That one definitely has more artificial sweetness miscues in the flavor. Bud light cold so very crushable. But hamms has that flavor, albeit very light.

Im glad I read that article and introduced myself to hamms. It's likely the cheapest and best of the "worst" kind of beer, relatively speaking. If the best is also the cheapest in every other walk of life, why not go for it.
