NE IPAs and Michigan IPAs aren't even in the same league. No disrespect or anything- I think Michigan has one of the best overall beer scenes in the country. But I don't see how any objective person can compare any Michigan IPAs to things coming out of Lawson's, Alchemist, Hill Farmstead, etc.

I'm not the biggest fan of MI IPA's relative to some others, but I personally haven't been impressed with SoS or Heady. As mentioned before, it's all subjective. I may take Pliny or Tropicalia over Hopslam (maybe), but I'd take Hopslam over SoS or Heady. Nobody's right or wrong, it's just different storkes for different folks, which is what makes beer so great.

I was thinking of linking this thread to the Short's distribution thread so others out of this area could see how well Short's IPA's performed in our not-so-scientific poll. Now, I'm thinking that may not be such a good idea - they don't need to see this.

One of their two only bottled collaborations ever was with Half Acre. Freedom of '78. An IPA with Guava Nectar. It's heavenly. I thought it might have seen distribution in Chicago in year's past, but maybe not. Point being, it's worth seeking out. It's out of season now though

I had wondered if it was available in Chicago as well. I had it once in Michigan, but never had the time to see if Half Acre (or anywhere else here) had it. I wasn't in love with it, but I'd try it again.

Half Acre's version was released the first time they did it (3+ years ago?) in bombers. But wasn't as good as the Shorts version imo.

HA released another batch this past summer as well. I picked up a bomber at the brewery.

Ah, missed that but just noticed some reviews from last year. Would like to try it again next time they do it. I actually had it before I ever got to try the Shorts version. So I'd like to see what I would think about it now.

I've never had the Short's version but I enjoyed the HA version last year. Wasn't mind blowing certainly but was perfectly suited for the summer weather with the nice guava notes. Hope they make it again this year.

Freedom of '78 (Short's version, anyway) was one of my all-time faves. I completely forgot about that one. Can I retroactively replace UPA with that, back on page 1 of this thread? Thanks.

I'm probably in the minority on this, but I think North Peak's Burly is truly awesome. Two other favorites are Short's Controversiale and WH Train Hopper.
