I'm guessing price and availability have a lot to do with it. Although, honestly, if you can throw down for Cascade, you probably have the resources to find some Cantillon.

In terms, of your statement, I would agree with you on that front for some breweries such as desthil. Also, I would say that Almanac consistently puts out sours with an intense sour streak. However, I think that many American sours, such as Une Anne, have a lot more to them then their sour streak. One reason why I love Une Anne so much is that, in addition to many of their sours having an intense sour streak and tartness, many of their sours provide an excellent representation of the fruit flavor that they are representing in each Le Seul. Granted, I haven't experienced this representation in EVERY Le Seul, but many of them give off an excellent fruit flavor. Like I said, in many ways you are correct, and Belgium sours definitely deserve JUST as much attention as these American Wild Ales, but I wouldn't quite underestimate the power of 'Merica :grinning:

I couldn't agree more. Its easily the best sour and in the conversation with 2 or 3 others as the best beer period. Of the style its head and shoulders above for me, I'm a stout guy so that says a lot.

Not to be rude, but have you had Cantillon fruited lambics? Une Annee doesn't make a beer that measures up to the least of their beers. And if it's American beers that show off fruit well, De Garde, Funk Factory, Jester King, New Glarus, Wicked Weed, and innumerable other breweries deserve mention before Une Annee. I'm glad you like them, and of course you're welcome to your opinion, but they just don't do it for me at all (I've had about 75% of their beers).

American Brewers do deserve praise for their wilds, but true lambics will always reign supreme for me thanks to their balance and craftsmanship. Some American brewers are making progress toward complex sours, but none are quite there yet. American wilds are a different beast entirely and should be praised on those grounds; they're really hardly comparable to lambics anyway, and to do so is basically unfair to them since many choose to play by their own rules.

I have to go by region here and put them in order.

    NC:

    Natty Greene's
    Green Man
    Wicked Weed
    Haw River
    Fonta Flora

    The rest of the US:

    Cascade
    Jester King
    Freetail
    Allagash
    The Bruery

    The rest of the world:

    Cantillon
    Tilquin
    Rodenbach
    Birra del Borgo
    Alvinne

I know some of you must be going "No Drie Fonteinen?" I've only had one of their beers, the Oude Gueuze, and it was before I was ready for funk of that magnitude, so I didn't appreciate it. Want to try more but haven't really had the opportunity.

I feel your pain my man. I have a trip to SC in a month to see my sister and I know she will love Alexander as much as I do. Trying to hold onto the 1 bottle I have left. Even with a fridge full of top notch brews it ain't easy.

Well, then I can tell your a lambic guy, whereas I like to be simply obliterated by sour power, so let's just leave it at that and be friends :grinning:
