Recently had a Westbrook One Claw fresh at the brewery. It was so delicious. A good candidate for the top five.

Have not had a lot of Rye IPAs but did have a very enjoyable one yesterday on tap at Blue Mountain Brewery in Virginia--Rye Barchetta. Tasty beer and clever name.

    But.. they're so different! :stuck_out_tongue:

Red's Rye is my favorite, but it doesn't taste much like a rye beer IMO- the caramel malts dominate the grainy rye flavor. Ruthless and 4 Hands Divided Sky do have some rye flavors, but not much by my palate.

I want to say GF Hop Head Red uses some rye in the bill? If so, it's a close second to Red's.

Any example of one using 100% rye? Even straight rye beers only use 30-40%

Well damn, thread over then I guess. I figured, if "rye" was in the title of the beer, it was an all rye malt beer but I was wrong. Ya learn something new every day. Makes me wonder what an all rye malt beer would taste like because I know that rye malt is not something that imparts a caraway seed flavor like in rye bread, so it wouldn't taste like that. Thanks for the correction.

I can't remember exactly why, but it's very hard to brew beer using more than 20% rye. Pretty sure it has something to do with the rye thickening up.

The beers I've had using the highest percentage of rye taste very grainy and corn-y to me. They finish crisp and clean, which is why I'd guess most brewers use it. Have you noticed any grainy swill/BMC flavors when drinking any Rye IPA yet? That's from the rye. Try smelling your empty glass once you're done with one, and I bet you'll know what I mean.

Keep your eye out for the Boulevard mixed 12 packs featuring two tasting room beers if you'd like to try a very rye-heavy beer.

    They are also very brown.

Reds Rye (Hands down my go to beer around town!)
    Rye of the Tiger
    Ruthless Rye
Black Magic RyPA (Ok I know it's a PA but it's close and to me it's damn good)

That's what Ive had that I can vote for. (i had Hop Rod but it's been to long for me to throw that in her too. The four listed I've had in the last 12 months)

Just finished my last bottle of Ruthless Rye and looking forward to never getting it again. The flavors just didn't go well together for me on this one, and I've have other RIPAs before. I'd much prefer a roggenbier.
