Smuttynose Old Brown Dog is a great example of the Style.
DFH Indian Brown is one of their best beers IMO.
Ipswich Nut Brown Ale.

For an off the radar choice
Boulder Brewing FlashBack Ale (Indian Brown Ale), great flavors in that one.

I can't think of my favorite five. I expect my most favorite one is Moat Mountain Bone Shaker from No. Conway, NH.

Smuttynose Really Old Brown Ale is also quite good.

 

This thread is just getting me worked up for Founders Frangelic Mountain Brown. Sweet, sweet goodness. Maybe this will be a backstage series release that'll be easier to get.

Surprised not to see more love for Brekle's Brown. I think it pretty much nails the style. It and Bell's Best Brown are my two favorites, especially for being made to category specs.

The only 2 that I can recall having and enjoying. Probably haven't tried more than 6-7 American brown ales.

DFH beers are good to but one is very sweet & the other I don't feel is in the proper class BUT is also good
Personally think Bells is the reference standard , which is not to say it's the best there is but a benchmark in it's class
