Surly Moe's Bender (well above the rest, IMO)
    DFH Palo Santo Marron
Surly Bender & Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar (tie)
    Smuttynose Old Brown Dog

It's a shame that more people can't try Moe's Bender. It is a heavenly beer (though the glass I had at last year's Darkness Day seemed not quite right).

    no order:

    goose island imperial brown
    palo santo
    frangelic mountain brown
    DFH indian brown
    rogue hazelnut

upon second glance i'd say that's probably in order.

I think Old Brown Dog really is the brown ale by which all others should be compared. It is what I think of when I think brown ale. Everyone here seems to enjoy it as well. One other cool thing about it, it is really approachable for those of you looking to convert your friends.

I can't remember if TBA was classified as a brown ale (I'm pretty sure it is) that would be my first choice.

Troegs used to have a brown ale but they stopped brewing it called 'Rugged Trail'. Had a nice nutty backbone too it and pretty easy to drink. Wish they stilled brewed it.
