Anchor Liberty Ale is an IPA...in fact it was the original American IPA.

Jolly Pumpkin is one of the best breweries on the planet and they don't make either of those styles.

Anchor consider's their Liberty Ale an IPA

Liberty Ale® was first brewed to celebrate the bicentennial of Paul Revere’s historic ride. As the first modern American IPA brewed after prohibition and the first modern American single-hop ale and dry-hopped ale, Anchor’s Liberty Ale® is the original craft brewed ale and the beer that started a revolution.
Edit: just realized this was mentioned a 1000 times

My favorite brewery, and Madrugada Obscura is amazing. One of the most unique beers I've had yet they manage to combine the stout/sour flavors perfectly.

They might now, but Fritz Maytag has stated that he didn't think of Liberty Ale as an IPA when he created it.

MA*: Was Liberty Ale ever meant to be an India Pale Ale, or did it just come out in that direction?
FM: You know, I didn’t have that in mind...We purposely made it quite extreme, but I did not think of an India Pale Ale when I made it. That certainly would be a pretty close description in terms of hoppiness and all malt.

I've noticed that the new owners have taken to re-writing US brewing history lately, making a number of such claims. There were dozens of US IPA's, Stock and other strong ales brewed after Repeal, and many more dry-hopped beers and ales. Old US beer recipes are difficult to acquire and many of those that exist are often not specific as to hop usage, but most US ales of the era between Repeal and Craft Era used US-grown hops and some were probably "single hopped". Certainly the best-remembered, Ballantine India Pale Ale was closer to today's "American IPA" in IBU's, ABV and hop usage than to today's "English IPA".

IIRC Anchor's new website also includes a video in which they claim their Porter was the first US post-Repeal porter which is nonsense, as well. There were probably hundreds of US porters brewed after Repeal- numerous northeastern breweries brewed a porter and a handful (Yuengling, Stegmaier, Narrangansett, Falstaff's draught Krueger and Ballantine) survived into the craft era when Anchor created theirs. Given Anchor's iconic history and its pivotal role in US brewing history and the craft beer movement, it seems unnecessary to embellish the truth.
