Has anyone simply attached a tap tower to the lid of a chest freezer, seems a lot easier than making a collar. Pros/Cons?

You have drill a hole in the lid, making the freezer kind of useless for anything else. Also, sometimes more height is required to comfortably fit the kegs and lines.

What rmalinowski4 said. I added the collar to my kegerator to accomodate the height of the kegs and I still had to buy the low profile couplers in order to make sure the lid would close.

On a side note, my buddy used a deeper feezer than I did and he was able to do exactly what your descirbed.

I saw one on Homebrew Talk where they built a fermentation chamber on top of the keezer. It had a trap door to get to the bottom were the kegs were and a separate temp controller for the top chamber. Thinking of doing something like that with mine, it was pretty awesome.

I didn't build a collar for mine and it has worked out fine. I have standard couplers so maybe I have a deeper freezer than some people. I can comfortably fit 3 sixers in the well with the tank on the shelf and still have room for loose bombers. The only thing that I don't care for is the tower is a little shaky and at some point I want to add some wood to the underside of the lid, of course, I have been saying that for years and still haven't gotten around to it. Pours beer just fine so it's not a high priority. If you have any questions feel free to BM me.
