I'm thinking about saving a 3 hour tour growler for Thanksgiving. I've asked a couple of people about this plan, but would like to get some more opinions if possible. It will have nearly 5 weeks on it by then. Has anyone held on to one for that long, and if so how was it tasting?

Thanks in advance for any input!

Seal the cap with electrical tape, refrigerate and you should be good to go.

This plan works quite well. I just opened a Town Hall growler from 2013 at Darkness Day under these same conditions, and it was good as new.

The electrical tape in the fridge method works quite well, even with growlers that are not counter pressure filled. I had a growler of KBS that was a few months old by the time we drank it. It was still perfectly carbonated.

My friends & I have kept sealed Town Hall growlers for 2-3 years with little to no fall-off. They way they fill them, they keep as well as bottles.

I don't see what the electrical tape is accomplishing while the beer sits in your fridge. I tape growlers when I ship them so the cap doesn't wiggle or get bumped loose, but if the beer is sitting in your fridge and its designed seal fails, your homemade seal isn't going to do anything.

There is some kind of magic at MTH. Their growlers keep seemingly for years, while other places fills seem to be crap if wait a day before cracking them open.

Thanks everyone. I've always had good luck with their barrel aged growlers. In fact, I just opened a Manhattan growler at Darkness, which tasted great. I was wondering though with a beer like this, that's lower alcohol and more dependent on carbonation, if it would hold up as well. . Can anyone speak directly to 3 hour tour?

I opened a growler Saturday, drank half, opened Sunday, drank 1/4, opened Monday night drank last 1/4. By Monday I could tell the carb had slipped ever so slightly, but honestly Monday night I thought it tasted best.

So by that I would assume if you capped it hard and tapped it, you should be more than ok.

I can't imagine 5 weeks will be any problem at all. The 20 month old Buffalo Bock I opened on Friday was just as carbed as when I had it on tap. This was stored in my basement without tape.

It seems like others have already said that their growlers hold up well. I am curious to know details of their filling process...

Last year, I cracked a 3HT growler 5-6 weeks after in was filled. Tasted fantastic! Coconut didn't fade at all
