I'm trying to put together a tasting of beers for a friend who likes tropical, fruity notes. Looking for stuff that is easily obtainable, basically trying to find her 'go-to beer'. I'm in WeHo/LA, so stuff I'd have to trade for like Zombie Dust or Heady is out. Aiming at Pale Ale, IPA, IIPA, but I'd be willing to include other styles.

    Last night I did:

Deschutes Red Chair - great success, but it IS seasonal only

Ballast Point Sculpin - read that the bottles were less tropical, seems true. I got barely any tropical/sweet notes, though it was still enjoyable for both of us.

Also cracked some Hop Stoopid for myself and found it to be a bit floral/tropical, but maybe this was just booze palate.

I'm thinking I will try to get Port City Mongo, and Aroma Coma if I can find it... any other suggestions?

    CHEERS !

You should consider Saisons. Some have very "tropical" notes.

Give Avery Maharaja a try if you can get it out there, has some pretty tropical pineapple notes.

Hahah! It tastes more like the Forest Moon of Endor mixed with pine needles.

Central Waters Illumination is a good one.

Fuck man, this is why I wish Sucks was still around (although soon it will be year 'round).

That beer is a fantastic mango/guava bomb.

First that come to mind would be Pliny and Mongo. Not sure about the Pliny situation in the LA area. Mikkellers Tiger Baby brew was a nice tropical IPA, but it's actually brewed with passionfruit and mango. Similar notes to Zombie Dust/Edward. The label is also equally awesome.

I am DEFINITELY awaiting the reintroduction of Sucks. I missed it the first time around and it sounds amazing. I can actually get bottles of Pliny at my Whole Foods, though they keep them in the back so you have to ask to get them.

Since you aren't that far away, you might make a trip to Ladyface in Agoura Hills. Looks like their weekly cask is their IPA with orange peel.

I can, recently tried it and LOVED it. Maybe you caught some tropical notes, but for me that was definitely not the dominant flavor. I found it very pine-y and grapefruity

I've only ever bought 2 beers by the case. The first is Nugget Nectar, and the second is Sucks. It's such a good beer. I can't even think of a comparable when I go beer shopping.

Mort Subite Kriek? Lol, I dunno, it's of good quality, quite sweet and fruity-berry, and generally not difficult to find. Highly drinkable. Though honestly, there ARE much better lambics out there - more tropical ones, too - but they wouldn't fall into the category of "go-to beers" because of the price and scarcity.

Never heard of "WeHo", but if you are in LA you might be able to find Alpine Duet. One of the fruitiest IPAs I have encountered. Even for a one time taste, it is a must. *If you can get it fresh* (famous last words, I know) its a total citrus/grapefruit/tropical fruit bomb.

Kona - Wailua Wheat was good for a fruity wheat beer. As bland as the reviews are for it, it isnt a bad beer by anymeans its just a tasty refreshing beer, one thing about that stands out is it doesnt taste syrupy

Three Floyds Dreadnaught, Avery DuganA, and Bell's Two Hearted Ale are all pretty fruity.
