Has anyone ever traded away a beer before trying it? My friend has a bottle of Humahpu's and Vanilla Bean DL and is thinking of trading them away for more whales. I told him he shouldn't trade a beer like those without trying them first.
So have you ever done something like this?

Not as primary material for the trade but I've sent plenty of extras that I've never tried.

I over promised on Barrel aged Yeti (years ago) & had to trade it before I tried it. Silly me...

Yeah. I traded Hommage for a WHOLE bunch of stuff I had never tried and wanted to try.

I traded away a FW Bretta Rose before I tried it, but was lucky enough to get another bottle, as an extra no less. I think for bigger whales like BVDL, if you're serious about beer that's one you've got to drink before you go and pimp it out and the trade forum. Never know when you'll have another chance to try it.

I never have and can't imagine doing so, as I'm a "variety is the spice of life" type. But, I suppose if you knew that you weren't into a particular style but came into some big trading guns in that style (thinking of someone who perhaps doesn't like sours and comes into some Cantillons or something), I suppose it'd be somewhat understandable.

i traded Sought after Pumpkin beers without trying them because i really don't like Pumpkin Beers. Also traded Velvet Merkin And BA framing hammer because i was offered whales for them, but i wouldn't do that again, i ended up really regretting not trying these beers i probably would have liked.

I once traded my only bottle (1-bottle limit at the brewery) of Madness & Civilization 3 for a whole mess of stuff I never had before. It was an unbelievable trade and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

This. I traded several Good Gourds this year before trying it because I really don't like pumpkin beers. I did finally get a sip of it from a friend that was drinking it on tap and can say it was actually not too bad (still not my thing though).

Yes. I've done it a few times. But it's usually a case of trading beers to land a specific beer for a regular trading partner and then sending it along.

Traded Flora w/blueberries and Sarrasin for 2013 KBBS and not a single regret. Also traded the Bullfrog Grzzz set for 2013 Assassin and 2 2014 Assassins. Would not think twice about doing those deals again.

I do everything in my power not to trade before try since the beers I acquire are usually through trades and for a reason: drink. I do not trade beers that were gifted to me or I got as extras (I do send them along as extras if I had them before).

I have a feeling your friend will regret trading away that BVDL. Why not see if he can open that bottle up with someone who has some big beers he has not had and wants to try?

This is what I've been doing with some local beer friends I met through trading. Doing a KBBS vs. BVDL around Thanksgiving with a couple other people. Rum Fayston vs. PVW Fayston soon with another. Probably 3F Schraebeekse vs. LPK/LPF soon as well. This approach cuts my trading in half and I get to share great beers with people who can really appreciate them.

This is precisely what i did with a guy who was trading away a whale looking for a db huna, really didn't want to trade it away but i really wanted to try the beer he had. So we decided to do a share instead (luckily we were in the same city) and now we have bottle shares at least twice a month and have become good beer buddies.

That's definetly the way to go. Made a great friend in Iowa this that hooks me up with TG on the regular. I bring top shelf every time to share, last trip brought a Cthulhu to put along side both KBBS in a share. Next trip the Black Magick trio will be on the menu.
One friend shared a Rare earlier this year, first Assassin bottle I got I made sure he was there to enjoy.

I think sometimes certain beers get so far overvalued because they are rare (and usually good) and people are willing to go nuts trading for them. So if for instance someone was offering up 5 beers I have not tried (and cannot get without a trade) for a really rare beer I have and have not tried I have to admit I would be tempted...

Sometimes, if I know I'll get to try it with my regular tasting group then I will trade mine away to bring something new in.
