I am involved in a trade at the moment where the beer I've sent is said to be 'flat' by the recipient. How are these situations typically handled in the beer trading world?

I happened to ship first because I am a new trader, and so I have not yet received my beer. Should the trade be altered so that I receive less beer because said beers were bad?

It was a 4pk of cans. Should unopened cans be returned to me so I may attempt to return them? What if all cans have been opened and may not be shipped with any beer in them?

Not a pretty situation! Any input would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Maybe have your recipient try another can, checking to see if the can has lost pressure. If not, and the beer is still flat, I personally would send something else as consolation. It isnt required by any means, as you can not tell if a beer will lack carbonation unless the can is soft, but the gesture would be thoughtful.

Hey BA Forum Folks. I have been offline for a bit with the new project, but I am back on to address concerns of under-carbonated cans of Abrasive and what we are doing about it. Part of what is making this problem so difficult to address is the spotty nature of the issue. On social media, we have seen descriptions of Abrasive ranging from “perfect” to “flat” to “tastes fine but low on carbonation,” with at least two people reporting both well-carbonated and under-carbonated beers within a given 4-pack. Also, we have heard of no issues with kegs pouring flat. We’ve only released one batch thus far, so all of this came from the same source. That makes it a hell of a problem to decipher. Please know,

      1) We have always and will always stand behind our products. The integrity of our beer and the trust you have in it is what has brought us this far. Your good will is what keeps us going, and this issue is our #1 concern at the moment. This isn’t bullshit or lip service. Nothing makes my stomach turn more than hearing that people aren’t happy with our beers.

      2) We ARE listening to what you are saying. With the volume of comments in this thread, there is clearly an issue. We are working to figure out where the problem lies. We have spent the last few days pulling Quality Control data from countless points (from the fermenters to the moment the can is seamed) to determine where the problem lies.

      3) The Commissioning Technician from Comac (the Italian manufacturer of both the new canning line and our previous line in Brooklyn Center) is involved, to aid us in pinpointing and troubleshooting the line. He has been setting up the new line and is still here.

      4) Yesterday we spent almost all of our energy checking carbonation levels, weights, and quality of the beer package, and all of these tests noted the desired levels. This weekend we will be checking cans from previous runs to attempt to get answers.

      5) To date, we have received only two emails sent to Surly regarding flat cans of Abrasive. While BA is a great place to discuss issues, it’s not allowing us to get in front of the problem with specifics and information. If you have beer that is below standard, PLEASE email ([email protected]) us so we can have a dialogue and respond to you directly.

      6) We are working on it. We promise. We are taking it seriously and doing everything that we can. We just need a little time to get you answers, and we will do so early next week.

If you have bad cans, send us an email. Then, please, hold on to them. We will make it right.

      See you drinking,

      Omar

Re-send when you can guarantee the cans will be good

This is not the sender's fault, but this is another situation where good faith should prevail. Surly will make the OP whole, he can then resend. Sounds like Surly needs the old cans and this will add some cost to the receiver which may or may not be worth it for them to ship back. Additional shipping charges will require some good faith here between both parties.

There are some risks in the trading game that just need to be accepted sometimes. Both sides will end up spending more money here, but good faith should result in both sides getting something out of deal.

I sent a Tired Hands growler and it was flat. This was one of the 2 times it ever happened. The receiver didn't ask for any replacement, but I told him I'll send him another growler next time we trade. I just did last week.

It's a courteous gesture, but I wouldn't go out of my way to replace it unless your cans get replaced. Ask him to try another first, then go from there.

Seems like a tough situation since your partner hasn't sent his/her box and is already drinking the beer (which is odd IMO).

They should still send the beers you agreed to since you dont have any control over its quality. But if you feel guilty then do whatever you think is fair. Maybe set up a future trade where you can throw in some extra cans that aren't flat.

normally I would agree, but Abrasive's lack of carbonation issue is very well-known at this point, and I'm sure the other trader wanted to find out if he got lucky or unlucky. this has the look of a trade that was worked out before the issues were known, and not completed until after they surfaced.

Yeah it seems the OP didn't know about this problem. First time I heard about it too - countless breweries have QC issues. If the recipient was planning on screening the beer and hiding that from the OP then that is a really shady thing to do.

Normally I don't touch any beer I receive until my box lands and is secure. But, if we're looking at shelf beers it's no big deal, I'm assuming for a 4 pk it's not a Whale deal, but it would depend on what was being flipped. If it was me id feel bad to send a bum beer and I'd replace it, and go back where I got it from and have them handle it.

X100. Maybe I'm crazy but I don't think its good karma to drink anything until my box has shipped. Not cool IMO

OP, I assume your trade partner has lots of good feedback under his belt?

Yes, he definitely has a lot of good feedback. Thanks again for all the input BAs! It's helping a lot in trying to gauge how to handle the situation fairly. A lot of good/thoughtful ideas! Trying to work out the right solution...TBC

I wish there were some more definite guidelines/etiquette on this topic through BA. I couldn't find any.

which means he's very up on current beer/trading news, and definitely found out about Abrasive having issues in between the time you guys agreed to trade, and then you actually shipped. of course he opened a single can, I would have too.

Thats why we say trade at your own risk, there are just some situations that can't have guidelines, its something you and your trade partner should be able to work out amicably.
That being said i hope everything works out here.

Same happened when @Ruddick sent me a tired hands growler of Mago Tago...I told him not to worry about it as it was not his fault, but he sent another one anyway...It was awesome he did that and its something I really appreciate..

So, id say just send again as your trading partner will or should really appreciate it and you guys could build a great trading relationship...

Not necessarily...Ive been trading for quite a while, even though my profile only shows 14....Ive never heard of the issue...And I wont assume that he knew of the issue unless he posts in here...I just find it bad karma to get your box, not send the box that is owed and start drinking the beer....

@Raisingfable has he sent your box yet?
