    Hi all --

I've got a few odd bottles I'd love to try (all those darn chili stouts that are so, er, hot these days -- Bomb, Mexican Cake, etc.), but I've never traded, nor do I keep a cellar w/ a bunch of nice stuff in reserve.

So, the etiquette question is: Is it considered improper in trading to post an ISO/FT with bottles you know you can get at your local bottle shop, but don't actually have in-hand? For example, I'm in a spot where I can get Logsdon/Funkwerks/etc. awfully easily locally. Is it verboten to use those as my "FT"? Or, is it permissible to do that, but just include some sort of language that lets readers know I can get them, but don't have them in-hand at the moment?

I obviously don't want to be that bastard that promises something and can't come through, so I was thinking I'd limit the proposed FTs to stuff I absolutely know I can get -- as in, tons of stock available, but if it's poor form to list FTs you don't have in-hand, I'm not sure how to swing a trade at all (other than making big investments in beer I may not eventually be able to trade and therefore be stuck with. Though you could do worse than being stuck with good beer...)

Anyway, any thoughts/advice/etc. would be much appreciated!

Yes, I feel this is totally fine. Since you are from CA you could let folks know some of the more sought after shelf stuff that you have access to. And in BM negotiations just spell it all out and you should be fine!

In fact if you want to give it a whirl, kick me a BM (I have some Bomb)

Plenty of people would trade for Funkwerks, Logsdon and other "shelf beers" from your area. Put up an offer and I think you'll be surprised

Thanks for the thoughts, guys. Glad that it's not frowned upon to offer stuff you don't necessarily have in-hand.

@heystevec, I actually chose a somewhat poor time for this post, as I'm soon to be out of the country for a spell. But, once I return, maybe I'll shoot you a BM to see if you still have that Bomb around and perhaps we can work something out!

Bomb is a recent addiction of mine! I will always have it around. BM me whenever

I do this all the time! I always make sure I let the person know that I do not have it but can get it if its a situation like this. As long as you aren't promising people super limited one offs, go for it. I have been in situations where stuff runs out (Modern Times Fortunate Islands), but know it will be back in stock. I informed the people I was trading with and they were cool with it. They waited until it was back in stock. I rewarded their patience and cooperation by sending more than was agreed upon. This was not necessary, but i felt like it was the right thing to do.
