Is it common practice to openly post a bottle FT that you just received in a trade as an extra? I would assume this is generally frowned upon. I just wanted to get opinions.

Can't see why this would be an issue for anyone.

I don't know if it's "common practice", but I don't think there's anything wrong with taking an extra and flipping it for something else that you want. Once the beer is in your possession, it's yours, to do whatever you want with.

I personally would never do this, if it was something I really didn't want then I would give or share with a friend. Although if someone was trading extras that I sent to them it would not rustle my jimmies.

I voted not acceptable, but I feel that would be mostly for limited release stuff. If I send someone an extra that is something that was hard for me to track down for whatever reason, it's probably because it's very delicious and I'd like them to have a crack at it without having to give up anything crazy.

If it's something that the original trader can grab fairly easily or locally, I have much less of an issue with it.

I haven't done it but I don't see a problem with it. Might be a beer type you don't care for or that you've already had.

I personally try to stay away from doing this. A lot of extras are bottles on a person's "Wants", so if I send a sweet bottle to someone off of their "Wants" as an extra, I'd be a little sour about finding that they've immediately flipped the bottle in an ISO/FT post. It is somewhat deceptive. If I send someone a bunch of Zombie Dust (or similar level of beer) as extras, I could care less what they do with them.

I don't care at all with regular trading partners. If they need to use a bottle to get something to make them happier, so be it. I've only done this once and I ran it past my buddy to make sure he was good with it.

So, I'm brand new to beer trading, but have been involved in other trading communities where I've developed my "it's completely fine" opinion. It's not something I do or would do, personally, but I'm of the general opinion that once it's in your possession you get to do whatever you want with it.

I see extras as gifts. Yes, I can technically return or re-gift something that someone was kind enough to give me, but I'm probably not going to do it right in front of that person. To me, that's what you're essentially doing by publicly trading it on the forum.

PS - I have never traded an extra and I would personally avoid it.

All valid points. So valid, in fact, I think you should reward yourself for your insight by taking a few days off from posting, until say... 4-5 pm. on May 8th!

An extra is a GIFT as mjtiernan said. I usually give extras as something I think the trader would like and if I ever saw them trade it for something else I would probably stop trading with them.

If you want to gift it to someone else because it's not a style you like or you have had it before then that is ok to do.

really depends on the nature of the trade and your relationship with your trading partner. i'd feel like a dick if i retraded any of the extras i've received, honestly.

i mean, it's a somewhat gray area in some situations. suppose a veteran is trading with a newb, and the vet includes some hot shot brewery only release as an extra. the vet may be doing this because the newb has no realistic way of obtaining that beer, and would likely enjoy it based on their hads/reviews/wants, etc (maybe it's even on their wants). or, perhaps the vet is giving it as a jump off to trade for something a little bit more sought after, knowing that the newb has little chance of acquiring such ammo at the moment.

i think the vast majority of the time, the thoughtful extra is trying to hit a want, or cater to your expressed beer preferences. in those cases, i think it's disrespectful to retrade (incidentally, i've been lucky enough that the majority of the extras i've received have been thoughtful). but there might be other situations where it makes more sense--say, you get an extra, you've already had it before. if i had a "valuable" beer, and extra'd it to someone, but they'd already had it (and suppose they didn't even like it, unbeknownst to me). i'd rather they trade it, and now i was responsible for them getting such-and-such that they wanted. i wouldn't feel disrespected in that instance, would you?

I feel that trading an extra as a piece in a future trade is wrong, but if you receive an extra that you have already had, or that you don't feel that you will enjoy, I don't see a problem in sending it as an extra to someone else who wants to try it, or who you think would enjoy it more. So no to trading extras, yes to re-extraing extras

do what you want with the beer you receive but understand that if we've traded and i see you post a FT with a thoughtful extra that i sent to hook you up then do not expect us to trade again.

I see no issues with it unless it was specifically given because the person really wanted it. I doubt I'd re-trade an extra, but I'd definitely pass on to another trading partner if I think they'll appreciate it more than me. Example: I sometimes receive Belgian IPA's which there is a very low chance of me liking so they usually get passed along.

I'd never trade away an extra just like I wouldn't regift and presents I get for bday/xmas etc. But I agree with sobeleg, I'd pass it on to someone else that may be interested or give it to someone I know IRL.

What I really wanted to know was about trading an extra. Specifically posting it FT in a thread. I totally understand that there are circumstances where someone may receive an extra that is a style they're not fond of, and may just pass it along to a friend for free. Or it may be a beer they've had a million times and so they gift it to a buddy who hasn't tried it yet. But regarding posting an extra FT - that's what I'd really like to know. Lets assume it is a style you know they like and it isn't easy for them to obtain. Thanks for all of the responses! I'm really surprised at how evenly-spread the poll responses are thus far!
