So I've been feeling myself getting caught up in all of this overhype nonsense that seems to have been happening lately, and I don't like it one bit. I've got a few pieces of tradebait, but I've decided I'd rather just drink what I like rather than trying to try the next big thing.

Still, I really like trying new beers that I can't otherwise get my hands on, whether it's a white whale or a local, so trading seems like a great idea.

MOREOVER, I've been considering trying to homebrew (at least one day), and I'm not sure if it'll actually be worth it (I'd wanna go all-grain pretty quick so I know it could be pretty time consuming).

THEREFORE, I was wondering whether people ever traded specifically for homebrew. I'd really love to try a big stout or an IPA that someone is proud of, but I didn't know if that'd fly in the FT/ISO forum.

So what do you think? Would any homebrewers consider a trade like that? Is it allowed on the site officially? Is it even a good idea?

It happens a lot, actually. I have specifically asked for home brews in a bunch of trades.

I don't think it's allowed on the ISO/FT forums per se, but hop on over to the homebrewing forums and ask around. I'm sure you'd be able to get something worked out. Personally, I would definitely be down to trade you some stuff, but unfortunately I don't have much as far as bottles go (I mostly keg).

I think posting an ISO/FT for homebrew might be against the rules. I've had several trades where homebrew is included as an extra though. Some people on this site make awesome homebrews, in fact I'm cracking SubpoenaDeuces's 18%abv stout tonight. I still haven't tried robinsmv's mythical homebrewed berliner however .

This forum just says beer for beer only. Why would homebrew be against the rules?

I just completed a trade for a box of homebrews. I dont brew myself, so I send a bunch of nice locals from my area for a variety of his homebrew.

Well I guess people can take the risk but there's no way to verify the quality of the beer.

Legally speaking it would be illegal because the homebrewer would be accepting something of value for his homebrew. Sending homebrew as extra would likely be fine.

Legally speaking, I dont think we can just mail each other commercial beer either. What value does a beer have? I can't walk into the grocery store and buy a bag of cheese puffs with a can of torpedo.

You are right, legally speaking mailing beer is an issue. I'm just saying that a homebrewer cannot accept something of value for his beer. I get approached all the time about selling someone a growler of beer or trading for beers. I decline every time and just give it away.

Legally speaking, you're just a nice dude.

FWIW, someone ISOed my sour after I had sent it as an extra and the thread wasnt deleted and we made a trade for it. That was the only time I had a trade centered around my homebrew.

given some of the bottle counts of what gets traded in the forum, i'm not sure there's a great distinction between 'homebrew' and 'commercial' beer.

You can definitely trade for homebrew, I have put "Always happy to give or receive homebrews as extras." on my profile and have received and given many different hombrews.

With that said, I think you are better off finding a local homebrew club and showing up at one of their meetings. Most people I know are happy to share their homebrew with you and it won't cost shipping. I would contact the club and see if that would be appropriate and if you could bring something to share that would be appropriate at the meeting.

At the same time, I'd also love to share some of my favorite locals with someone who can't get them (particularly Jack's Abby because I'm a huge fan of theirs right now and I want everyone else to be. I'm not going to offer up a Rare for a homebrew stout, but I have absolutely no problem trading some solid stuff I can get. The way I see it, the value in the homebrew comes from the time and commitment it takes.

    :astonished: thanks for the laugh.

One time I actually did post an ISO for a specific beer to compare, stylistly, with the beer I brewed.
It was answered quickly and the trade completed.

The homebrew was an Imperial stout I fermented with yeast cultured from Orval.
I traded for Jolly Pumpkin Madrugada Obscura 4homebrew to 1Madrugada plus some other things, each way, I do not remember what.

I have to admit that homebrew was pretty polarizing. People either loved it or hated it, there was no in between. Never got any feedback from the trader:flushed:.

All that said, I will put my Porter up against any commercial examples I have tried. My RIS are pretty good too but I drink them too fast. I was showing a friend to brew the other day and we drank an IPA I had on tap. He said it was better than half of the IPA they had on tap at his bar. I am not sure that was a compliment :stuck_out_tongue: but it was not a dialed in receipe and I thought it could be better as well.

Holy Hell /ramble and get another porter.

Besides your ramble, what's with the thanks for a laugh? I can tell you i am an attorney who works in the industry. It would technically be illegal. Whether people do it is another story.

I've done trades for homebrew and have received and sent plenty out as an extra. I like it.

In fact, one of my regulars and I swap homebrews (well, he sends me waaaaay more than I have ever sent him) and commercial goods. We discuss recipes and techniques, and if I ever make it to upstate NY, then I will certainly give him a jingle. Both of them.

I've traded my homebrew before. I usually just give it away unless it's a really special batch. I traded an amount of my big barleywine for some Adam and Pliny.

I have sent out and received plenty of homebrews, and I have seen ISO's for hb that didn't get pulled, so I guess it's okay. I have also seen hb sent out as parts of different ideas for sharing among BA's on the hb forum. IIRC there was a BIF for homebrews also.

The idea of joining a hb club is the best one, though. Every meeting I get to share at least 10 different hb from friends. Plus we are all dedicated to "stepping up our games" and the tasting gives us a chance to critique and improve our skills.
