I'm pretty new to trading and this is the first time I've run into this issue. Just looking for some opinions on how this is normally handled.

A couple weeks ago I received a BM asking if I wanted to trade and after a little back and forth we came to an agreement for a small trade. I was up front that I had half of what he was looking for and that this month the other beer he was looking for would be released. So as of now I haven't shipped anything since the beer isn't out yet. My trade partner bought the agreed upon beers and shipped them very promptly and they all arrived alright. One half of the trade I got was a IIPA only when I look at the bottle date it's over 8 months old. This is a newer trader and didn't seem to know that was too old. Is this on me because I never said I wanted it to be fresh? Do I just chalk it up to me not being specific enough?

It's not a huge deal as the beers aren't that expensive and it's not like the trader got anything out of it. I just wondered if anyone else has run into this before.

When I trade for IPAs I am very specific about asking for bottled dates before I trade for them. You would hope trade partner would know better, but if you didnt specifically ask I would just let this one go.

Have you told him? I would tell him, maybe he'll be cool and offer to replace it. But yeah, just make sure to ask beforehand next time.I've made the same mistake and got a 14 month old Aroma Coma. Cheers Ryan!

Yeah, that's pretty much what I thought. I just assumed that if you are trading you know that people want fresh IPA/IIPAs. Anyway I let him know that it's too old so hopefully his next trade partner won't have that issue. I guess he's just new to trading and didn't know better. He didn't offer to replace it but at least it wasn't a big trade and I learned a lesson.

14 months? Perfectly aged:wink:. Cheers Jesse!

He didn't offer to replace it either so I just put him on ignore, people are just simply jerks. What was it? Maybe I can get it.

I think it's a beer only distro'd to his state so I'm not worried about it. I'd actually never heard of it until he mentioned it. Appreciate the offer though.

I've been extra'ed really old IPAs, but never a beer that was agreed upon for the trade. You would think that not trading old IPAs would be common knowledge on the forums. Sorry to hear that OP

If the old beers you received are from Ohio send me a message

Sending out old stale IPAs is a no no, if they're on this site they should know better it's off discussed.

This really sucks for OP. It should be implied when trading IPAs that we're working with fresh bottles. I don't take any chances, though, which is why I always confirm freshness with my trade partners before finalizing a deal.

Extras, unfortunately, are a different story. I've gotten a number of dusty IPAs as extras (6+ months old). Also, most of the old IPAs I've received have been from a brewery that has full distro in my state.
