Hey Guys, My first post here on BA and would appreciate some honest feedback. Here is the back story, I'll keep it short: I posted up a trade on the forum, guy replies back with a trade proposal and asked to expand. I OK the initial trade proposal and then started negotiating the trade expansion. I didn't have a chance to send a Trade Request since we were still negotiating the expansion. Negotiation is going well, back and forth conversations and very close to getting the trade done. Then all of a sudden, he messages me saying that "He's traded away the [beer] and hopes to trade in the future". Is it me or is this terrible trading etiquette?! Let me here your opinions and hopefully I'll have more of an understanding of how trading etiquette goes.
That's the definition of bad trade etiquette. If you went out and bought beer specifically for this fool, feel free to post his ba acount in this thread and teach him a lesson, otherwise chalk it up as a learning experience and never talk to him again. A good trader considers a bottle spoken for as soon as its offered to one person.
Thanks @iwantmorehops for your opinion. Ill spare him this time since he's new. But I'll keep an eye on hum
Not too long. Maybe 2-3 hours but he failed to mention that he was entertaining other offers. Otherwise I would have been ok with it
Maybe he though your avatar, BeerPopinski, was going to drink all his beer before he could trade for it! On a more serious note, I don't think it is to the level of badness @iwantmorehops describes. I have yet to have a trade confirmed before discussing expansions. Your specifically indicating that you have confirmed the trade for the major items and that you want to now discuss expansion. Are you sure that both you and the other guy were on the same page here? If yes, then I digress, I'm flat out wrong. But it would surprise me if this was truly the case.
I don't want to sound snarky, but you say that you are gonna *spare him this time because he's new* and yet your join date of March 3rd, 2015 with 3 trades under your belt doesn't exactly make you a seasoned veteran in calling someone else new. Also, it would help if you actually disclosed what bottle(s) were up for trade on both ends to see why it didn't work out. With that information missing and only one side of the story, its hard to give an honest opinion. Just my 2 cents. Cheers!
@dmbforever true but I still feel his actions and only being on BA for two weeks were very much rookie mistakes. Still think my opinion on him being new is valid. As far as what the bottles are, it doesn't really matter what it is. To quote iwantmorehops, "A good trader considers a bottle spoken for as soon as its offered to one person." Thanks for your opinion.
@Lazhal The main bottle(s) were spoken for and it was clear that the negotiations were for expansion only. Just trying to make some sense of what happened and that's what this post is for. Thanks for your opinion, I appreciate it.
Undesirable trading etiquette? Yes. But since no trade request were officially sent and accepted by each sides before he backed out, no need to call the guy out here publically. Just chalk this one up and add him to your personal don't list if you choose to do so and move on.
I kinda view the trade request as merely a formality. Once I have a verbal agreement with someone to trade, I honor that. If messages are exchanged and both parties are in agreement about sending bottles, that constitutes a trade agreement in my mind. Bad BA's are gonna be bad BA's no matter how you slice it. You could have done everything right with this (and you basically did) including requesting a trade with him, and he still could have blown you off by simply ignoring your trade request as he fielded other offers. That's close enough to an auction for me to call it an auction. Since he's new, chastising him publicly may not be the best approach, so kudos for not calling him out just yet. But maybe sending him a message letting him know that what he did isn't really proper protocol would be helpful. Try not to antagonize or condescend, but simply explain that there's some unwritten rules around here. I take the Tony Montana approach when it comes to trading - "All I have in this world is my word and my balls, and I don't break them for no one."
