Their regular Alt does it for me, but the Sticke is 1a. I've had the Doppel once and don't much care for it. It's not really an Alt.

Are you in NYC now, or does the regular Uerige Alt make its way to Canadian shores?

I got the Sticke from Premier Gourmet across the border in Buffalo. The regular and doppel were there as well. Fairly strong German representation.

I'm amazed - I didn't realize they shipped bottles of the regular stuff to the US. Or was this on draft? If in bottles, I wouldn't buy it beyond 5 months or so, it starts to drop off after that.

The Sticke I bought was bottled Nvember 15 2014, I hope it's still ok. They are all bottled.

After years of not seeing Sticke or Doppelsticke, they seem to have returned to my area. One of my favorite pubs even typically carries one or the other on tap. I assume they must have changed or tweaked their distribution. I love the doppelsticke, but I just don't think I have a taste for alt...at least not from the source.
At the same time, I haven't seen Spezial in a long time.
Apparently the Andechs beers are starting to pop up all over the US now. You might encounter those in Ontario.
Anyone remember Brick (ironically out of Ontario) brewing a contract version of the Andechs beers? Whatever happened with that?

You can't find Andechs in Ontario, but I have grabbed their Doppelbock from Buffalo, it's one of the best beers I've had. What else do you recommend from that brewery? I am really interested in Munich Helles.

Their vollbier makes it to North America and is wonderful. They also have a Spezial hell that's a bit more potent that isn't exported at the moment but probably could be. They sell both bottles in Germany.
All of their beers are quite good and their versions are probably among the best examples of each style. Right now they export the vollbier, weizen, dunkelweizen, and doppebock. I'd love to see them add their Bergbock hell, personally. It's one of the best pale bocks you'll ever have.

I am on board with the lagers all the way. LAGER LIFESTYLE. I cant think of my favorites off the top of my head but I have yet to try a German lager that I do not enjoy. The crispness, refreshing taste that it offer is something that must be enjoyed during a hot day or whenever you need something to just enjoy. Keep on drinking the lagers, they are underrated.

I didn't know the regular Alt was exported. I've only seen the Sticke and Doppelsticke here. Even in Germany, it doesn't go very far past Düsseldorf.

I will say this - the Biershop-Braugasthöfe website that I like recommending to people will ship Uerige Alt straight to your door, direct from the brewery and always very fresh (I once got a delivery of Alt that had been bottled two days earlier). There was one time when there was a small problem and I had to speak German with the people who run the website to get things cleared up, but normally I don't think you "need" to speak German to use the site.

A 9er of Uerige Alt is €25,90 according to the site, and shipping to the UK runs about €18,90 for a packet. €5,00 per bottle is pretty expensive, but if you're having an itch that needs to be scratched, it's a pretty good option.

    Cheers and good luck!

thanks for the info, thats a great site. Good to know there is a way of getting some uerige over here. 5 euro works out at about £3.50 a bottle at the moment, which is as you say, a little expensive, its one for me to consider definitely, and i do have a birthday coming up! Hmmmm

actually, looking at it, if i get 18 bottles the price per bottle comes down to about £2.70 which is getting closer to not too bad. Some good stuff on that site by the way, i can speak enough german to find my around it. Youve used them before and found them reliable then?

It looks like it's a subdivision of the company that runs Biershop Bayern, same layout and everything. It seems like they run a few different websites with different themes and assortments. I've used the Biershop Bayern website three times now and they've always delivered.

Yes, lots of good stuff on that website. The only issue I had came when one of my Uerige orders didn't get shipped out. I e-mailed them and it seems like there was some turnover/reorganizing at Uerige and the person who was supposed to be in charge of this sort of thing was no longer in charge of this sort of thing and my order slipped through the cracks. But the problem was squared away quickly, and the bottom line is that I would use them again without hesitation. In fact, I wish I used them a little more, in retrospect.

Yep, same company runs both, and just so I don't drag the thread too far off-topic, @AugustusRex if you're looking for authentic German lagers, these two websites have lots of good ones. Unfortunately I don't think they deliver to North America. :slight_frown:

If you are also interested in the rauch's of Schlenkerla, you can try something like Spezial if you have the chance.

Mönchsambacher Lager is going to be tricky to land on this side of the Atlantic. The closest I came was a keg tapping which I totally couldn't attend here in DC :slight_frown: sometime ago. Then in Berlin tried to purchase it and went to a shop that carries it from time to time but they quickly sold out before I got there. The proprietor has to go down to the monastery there to get it.

Despite the name including Moench, it's actually a family-owned brewery and not a monastery. Still, great beer... http://www.moenchsambacher.de/brauerei
