Last week I brewed Northern Brewer's Caribou Slobber extract kit. I'm planning on bottling it the Saturday after Thanksgiving (3 weeks in primary, skipping secondary). I'm in Charleston, WV and I'll have family in from Richmond, VA for Thanksgiving.

I was thinking I could send a few bottles back to Richmond with my dad and brother (via car). Is this a bad idea? Any problem with newly-bottled beers traveling in a car for 4 hours, then sitting a few weeks to condition before drinking?

Should be fine if they're packed securely

Keeping them room temperature would be helpful. The agitation from bumping along in the car will, if anything, help keep the yeast in suspension while they are finishing their work bottle conditioning, so it should work out fine.

I'll also add that if there is any chance that your bottling/carbonation procedure could lead to over-carbonated bottles, you may want to advise your dad and brother to keep the bottles in a place where exploding bottles won't do any damage. Hopefully you are experienced enough that this should not happen, but mostly all of us has been there at some point in our homebrewing hobby.

Thanks so much for the feedback! My dad and brother will be excited they get to take home some home brew.

FYI, I wouldn't expect this to be any good at the dinner table. Not that you didn't do a good job of brewing it, but it sounds a bit young to really enjoy at about a month old. Go by taste, and if I'm wrong, you should definitely crack a few open around the turkey. Taste one before you head up and see if you should buy a few bombers instead. Worst case scenario, you'll have some good beers by time you are all sitting around the Christmas Tree / menorah / (family festive emblem).

Thanks, inchrisin. I was planninng on having my family take some sealed bottles home with them to drink 2-3 weeks after Thanksgiving. Definitely too young for enjoying with the turkey. Poor planning on my part, ha! But hey, Christmas beers!

I'm there right now. I won't be brewing my Thanksgiving beer until after Thanksgiving...

Bottle bombs and poor handling would be my concerns. This time of year I don't think temperature would be.
