And I don't mean "trapped" as a knock on Houston - I'm an East Coaster who's unable to return home until Wednesday, at the earliest.

So I figure since I'm here might as well make the best of it. I've already compiled a list of the best ranked stores/bars on BA in Houston proper (Flying Saucer, Spec's, Ginger Man, etc), but figured I'd reach out to the Texas crew to see if there are any under-the-radar spots I'm missing, or alternatively if there are places outside of Houston (but reasonably close by) that I should check out. Fortunately I have a rental car, so a little bit of exploring is certainly an option. And if there are any good events happening over the next couple days, let me know!

Anyway, thinking of heading over to Flying Saucer soon for some grub, but I'll keep checking back in here in case anyone responds.

Boondoggles in Clear Lake has a meh beer selection, but amazing pizza.
The Petrol Station is pretty popular with all the northside assholes who live nearby.

My (biased) list of bars you need to check out:
    1.) Petrol Station
    2.) Hay Merchant
    3.) Flying Saucer Downtown

My (biased) list of bottle shops/stores/etc.
    1.) Whole Foods on Kirby
2.) Specs in Midtown (on Smith St.)
3.) Specs on Montrose (clearance store, can find stuff WAY out of season there.)

Also, if you're in town, Petrol Station is doing a chairty bottle share on Tuesday. $20 entry that goes towards a local chairty plus a rare(ish) beer.

Thanks for the responses. Think I'm about to walk over to Spec's, head from there to Flying Saucer, them tomorrow try to make it to Petrol Station early in the day then Hay Merchant for dinner.

Maybe by the time I'm through with what's going to be a serious hangover, I'll be able to get on a flight back home.

Ha, wsnich, just saw your response as I posted mine. I'd planned on doing Hay Merchant for dinner, since someone BM'd me mentioning they do a local-steak dinner on Tuesday nights, but now you've gone and thrown a wrench in my plans...

Hmm, perhaps a steak dinner followed by bottle share? Do you know what time the charity event is tomorrow?

I read that post as, a bottle share, you bring $20 to donate, plus a bottle for the bottle share. But I could be wrong...

Correct. Ben (the owner of Petrol Station) is bringing a lot of bottles from his personal cellar for this event. We haven't decided what we're bringing yet, but I was thinking of bringing an '11 DL.

Well, unfortunately I didn't travel with any beer, but I'll see if I can pick up something interesting at Spec's or other places.

I'd be more than happy to front a bottle of something from out of state if interested. Just send me something later/next time in Houston.

Not yet. They do plan to, but they are still opening at 5 during the week.

If you want to do steak night at Hay Merchant I would recommend getting there early. They start at 5, and go till it is gone. Maybe it has settled down, but they use to sell out pretty quickly. I think it is one of the best steak night around. If you can catch an early dinner at Merchant, you still have plenty of time to make the Petrol bottle share.

Most ppl on here are correct...lived in Houston my entire life.

Petrol Station and Hay Merchant best places by far for craft beer on tap...flying saucer not too bad either right in middle of downtown.Petrol is a little harder to find tucked away in the heights but worth the trip. Very laid back atmosphere there.

Spec's liquor in downtown and D & Q mini mart best places for retail without a doubt. D & Q gets brew not even available to chain stores like Spec's. But Spec's downtown is a beast. Ask for Ryan if you go there....
