Heading to Rome for June 3rd through 7th. Plan to make a stop at the trappist. I am studying in Germany now so I could try and pick up a few and perhaps establish a trade with you? Feel free to message me if you are interested.

I've never seen it, but don't live anywhere near Rome. Not much of a trader, but I'll post here if I see it anywhere in my area.

Never heard of that one either. It could be a scam (Itally is an Olympic champion for that), though it could be very recent. Only the monks are able to award the Trappist insignia, and they reject many demands from abbeys around the world.

There are only 11 Trappist beer-brewing abbeys around the world (three of them recent): six of them in Belgium, two in the Netherlands (both only a few kms from Belgium), one in France (5kms away from Belgium tops), one in Austria and one in the USA (Spencer abbey in N-E).

the "trappist name can be awarded for other things than brewing activities >> nuns making cookies, for ex), but the abbey must belong to the "trappist" order way of praying doctrine and dogma.

    This is the Italian Trappist.

All Belgian news papers were talking about this new Trappist.

Hopefully it's as good as the American one, Spencer. While still a bit behind the flagships in and around Belgium, I've been really happy with that beer.

Mont des Cats in France does not have a brewery (their beer comes from Chimay), the Abbazia Tre Fontane in Rome however, does! More info: http://www.trappist.be/en/pages/logo-atp

Yes, I mentioned this in another thread (the X-mas thread, I believe)

Actually, when Spencer, Zundert and Engelzellen made it on the Trappist board, I can't say this made major noise in Belgium's medias (both Fr & Nl)... Something like a side bar article inthe finances pages of the newspaper, maybe in the gastronomy pages, but no headlines or full-page article.

OK, it looks like I'll be on the hunt for this Trappist beer, thanks

I am curious as how this tastes and if people enjoy it, and finally if at all or should be, compared to any Belgian trappist beers...

This could be a belgian bias: but so far, of all the Trappists I've tasted from out of Begium, only Mont Des Cats tastes like a Belgian Trappist.... no surprise, though, as it's brewed by Chimay/Scourmont.

Though I haven't tasted Spencer and this new Italian trappist, I can say that both Austrian trappist beers (Benno & Gregorius... though I see there is a third one now: Nivard) are so-so, and I never thought the La Trappe products (from Koeningshoven) were worthy of the Trappist name... And TBH, I wasn't impressed by Zundert's sole trappist beer either.

Hopefully, tasting the Spencer and Trè Fontane will change that!!

We're headed to Rome in Nov. so I will see what I can dig up, tho time will be short. Anyone know where to source it or is it just available at the abbey?

I recently enjoyed my first Spencer. It is not what I expected from a Trappist beer as it's a light Hoppy Ale. Seems to me the flagship trappist beers are generally dark quads no?? And even not being Hophead, I did enjoy this as it was very much more balanced than traditional American IPA's.

Based on what I can from google translate, looks like the Abbey's shop is opening daily, and the beer can be purchased there: http://www.abbaziatrefontane.it/negozio-monastico/

Has anyone gone there, and is it worth the visit? Looking on untappd, there is a bar called La Botticella that stocks the beer and is walking distance from Open Baladin and Ma Che. I'll be in Rome for 4 nights for the Coppa Italia and would like to try this one while I'm there.

I'll let you know in a few weeks. I think I did run across that bar, but because there is a restaurant by the same name.

Anyway, I believe this to be the place?
    http://www.yelp.com/biz/la-botticella-roma-2

But based on Google Street view, I'm not seeing anything...

I am pushing to go to the abbey, but this place is within walking distance of our accommodations if that can't happen!
