We maybe planning a family trip to the east coast and would like to save that possible hour to hour in a half with a kiddo in tow. I'd like to set up some pre-trades and for sure like to bring back some beers. What experiences have people had doing the short cut from MI through Canada back into the US with Beer? I read basically a case a beer is ok anything above that you may have to pay duty. Has anyone done this trip? mention more beer then a case with no repercussions? with repercussions? Have you had a harder time going into Canada or the US? etc etc Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and Cheers
I've taken a case per person (we had two people) of Michigan beer and was okay as we crossed into Canada. They asked if we had any alcoholic beverages, but never looked at it. When we crossed back to the US, all they asked was whether we bought anything in Canada, and our answer was 'no'. Be up front with them with what you have, or I think they'll get really pissed if they discover anything that you're trying to hide, and then they'll make life difficult for you.
I just did this exact trip a week ago. They didn't even ask when coming back into the United States whether we had any alcohol in the car. They did ask when entering Canada, for what it's worth. I told the Canadian border agent that we had roughly a 12 pack and he did not mention anything about paying duty.
