    Few questions...

I'm heading out to Chicago next weekend for 3 days, any must visit brew pubs or craft beer bars I need to check out while I'm there?

    2. I'd like to try some Three Floyds beers while I'm there, any places to find a good FFF variety in Chicago?

    3. Any tips for bringing bottles back on the plane? I never check bags; always carry on so I don't know the policies but any tips to ensure the bottles make it back with no problems would be appreciated.

Well, 3 Floyds, obviously.. And Pipeworks. Revolution isn't bad either.

Pretty sure you'll have to check a bag with beer bottles in it. Something about large amounts of liquid and glass.. Either bring an extra suitcase, or ship it back to yourself.

You should check out revolution's brew pub, half acre and Haymarket. You can get there by taxi or train depending on where you're staying. If you have transportation you should make the trip to fff it'll be worth it.

You won't be able to bring bottles in a carry on bag so if you're not going to check a bag you should plan on shipping them back to yourself.

    1. Haymarket and Revolution are musts if you have never been to them. Piece is also great if you like thin crust pizza as well. I'd recommend stopping buy some of the craft bars if you have time. Half Acre's tap room, Fountainhead, Map Room, Local Option, Small Bar, and Bangers & Lace are just a few.

    2. FFF beer may be available at the bars mentioned above, although the FFF brewpub is your only guarantee. Bottles are hard to come by, but Binny's is the best place to look. Some smaller, more expensive stores to check out would be Puerto Rico Food and Liquor, West Lakeview Liquors, Bottles and Cans, and the Beer Temple.

    3. You would have to mail them back or check them in bags. I'm pretty sure there is no liquid allowed on carry ons.

Bar wise, my favorite will always be Sheffield's. Go to the back, sit by the fireplace, and enjoy some amazing beers.

My two favorite bottle shops are Bottles & Cans and The Beer Temple. Can't go wrong with a Binny's stop either if you want massive variety.

Definitely get some Pipeworks, FFF, Revolution, and Half Acre beers.

I've really enjoyed Hopleaf and The Map Room on my few trips to Chicago; I also thought the food at Hopleaf was quite good.

Last time I also made stops at Goose Island Clybourn and Revolution's brewpub. Both were great; if I could only fit one in, I'd go to Revolution as they had a great mix of their beers and other breweries beers on their tap list (including some GI not even on tap at GI Clybourn).

I also had a FedEx in my hotel last time I went to Chicago, so I bought a box, some tape, and some bubblewrap and just shipped myself back a box of beer. The store across the street from Hop Leaf had stuff like Hopslam, FFF bombers and 6ers of Zombie Dust, 50/50 Eclipse variations, CW's, so I stocked up there.

    Enjoy!

You can't take it in a carry-on, have to check the bag.

I usually just pack ziplock bags and bubble wrap and never have any issue getting bottles back. Line you luggage with soft stuff, clothes, etc. When you are completely done with wrapping your bottles, take the laundry bag out of your hotel room closet and put all your bottles and such in that, and tie it off. That way you're triple protected against any spills or breakage.

For bottles Fischmans has the best selection IMO. Although the bar is a bit dirt-ball.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Yeah the 3rd question definitely came off wrong, I know you can't bring beers onto the plane, I meant are there any regulations on the way they need to be packed in the checked bag. Definitely going to use the ziplocks, thanks for the idea BeerBuckeye.

Most airlines have weight restrictions for baggage as well, so make sure you keep it under the limit (Southwest, which I usually fly, imposes a 50 lb limit for bags). Even with my clothes in the bag on my most recent travels, I was able to get a bomber and 12 beers on for less than 35 lbs. Last year I flew with a full case of beer and was up to about 38-40 lbs.

But as far as TSA regulations--as long as it's not leaking out, I've never had an issue with them (I usually put a note in the bag letting them know I have beer and to please just handle with care if they feel they need to check). It seems like an overkill, but I wrap each individual beer with bubble wrap, then put it in a ziplock bag. If you have some very, very rare bombers or something, these are great from Amazon:

Found out today I will also be in Chicago next week. Looking for anything similar to Short's, in terms of limited/experimental/seasonal brews.

Truly don't understand the Pipeworks fascination.
