Hello all. I am traveling on Thursday from Chicago to Pittsburgh for work and need some advice on places to hit up for beer to come home with. I'm stopping at Fatheads since its right on my way and thought about Voodoo but it's just a bit too far out of the way. Are there some bottle shops in and near Pittsburgh where I can pick up Voodoo beers? Also are there any other breweries I should be on the lookout for? Thanks in advance and cheers!
As far as breweries to hit, the Allegheny Libation Trail's recently been established, with eight breweries, two wineries, two distilleries, & a cidery/meadery within the space of a few miles along the Allegheny corridor. Would be cool to check out if you've got some time to kill. I don't make it to too many bottleshops, but I know that House of 1000 Beers in New Kensington (a little further up the Allegheny valley) carries Voodoo stuff, & always has a few of their beers on tap, including some rarer offerings. I don't think it's too hard to find Voodoo at other places, though.
Voodoo bottles are pretty hard to come by. They're working on brewing Good Vibes full time and sending out four packs, but I haven't seen any yet. Hoodoo seems a little easier to come by right now. I check out some Troegs beers. Their new Hop Knife is pretty damn good. And since moving here from Chicago, their Perpetual IPA has entered my go to list along with Two Hearted.
If you're driving, hit up Vintage Estates in Boardman, Ohio. Better selection and prices than you'll find in Pittsburgh. Also The Brew Kettle is an easy stop in Ohio. Best places for 6 packs and bottles in Pittsburgh are the Giant Eagles that sell beer. The Giant Eagle Market District is on the way in town from the airport. House of 1000 Beers is good for the hard to find and non-local beers, but pricey. I'd second the recommendation for Troeg's.
If your going to be in Sout Side to stop at Fatheads, swing by the Carson St Deli. They usually keep a good supply of VooDoo beers.
I would definitely second the idea of stopping at Vintage Estates in Boardman. Also, if you have the time, I would try to make it to East End Brewing. Don't know where you're staying but we had a great time at Bocktown Beer and Grill (Robinson) when we visited Pittsburgh a couple years ago.
Also, Caliente in the Bloomfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh has a selection of rarities for the area. Pricey like Ho1kB but Caliente is located in the city as opposed to New Ken if proximity to the city is an issue when you're beer shopping. And yeah, Vintage Estate is great in Boardman too. Prices are certainly better than the Pittsburgh shops. You will find great stuff at all 3 places. I second whoever brought up Roundabout too
